It's all my fault It's all my fault. Deegan's been in puppy class for 6 weeks now. And the instructor has praised us for doing so well the whole entire time. Unfortunetly, our last class really opened my eyes to a problem I have with Deegan. While he has learned everything very well, and follows commands. The instructor pointed out to me that he is very dependant on treats. If he does not see a treat, he will not do what you ask. I can't believe that I didn't realize this on my own, but when ever I practice with him I always have treats. And now, I don't know how to correct the situation. I really have to do something before graduation, which is in two weeks, but what? And on top of it I need to teach him a trick to perform for graduation day too. Anyone have any cool trick ideas that I could try? Any advice would be welcomed. |
I think with practice, he'll become less dependent on treats. Sully is still fairly dependent on treats when I work with his tricks, too. But I've gotten him to the point where I can hold a treat in my hand but not give it to him, and he'll still do his tricks. I'll only give him a treat for a perfect performance of one of the newer tricks. Here's a neat site that helped me when I was teaching Sully a few things: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/P.../indexorg.html |
This is a tip my trainer told me...do the trick close fisted...let him smell..ask him to do the trick and give treat..then do the same trick close fisted again with treat but don't let him smell it..give him the treat after he does the trick..then throw in a clased fist no treat but lots of praise...then start with treats again..maybe mixing it up will help..that is what I had to do with Maximus..good luck!! |
Have your obedience instructor tell you how to wean your dog off of food? All you do is skip rewarding a treat to your dog ever so often(give verbal praise). Slowly decrease the amount of time you use treats as an reward(remember to give verbal praise everytime) until your puppy is not expect a treat ever time he does something. |

That's some good advice. I will give it a whirl tonight. I hope it works... He was doing so well. Thanks! |

No, she never mention anything about weening them off. Which is why I am not the only one in this class to have this problem. |
thankyou so much for that site, i just printed it all out and will continue to train lexi on a few things i thought were impossible |
Try having the treats in one hand and do the hand signals with the other - When I want leah to sit I hold my hand out flat with the palm up and say Sit while holding a treat in the other hand behind my back. That way she never knows weather or not I have a treat and she sits just in case. This is a good way of weaing them of treats. Congrats on passing puppy school! |
Harley's like that too. I taught him a couple tricks and commands and made the same mistake of using only food treats. But I've gotten smarter than him and figured out that if I close my hand and rub my thumb across my pointer finger to show that I apparently have a treat in my hand he'll do his trick or command and I'll reward him w/ a rub down or w/ the clicker training I've been working him w/. I think you'll see over time they will eventually learn to do the tricks w/o all the treats! :D |
