Chasing feet & growling/biting pants? Hi, I'm hoping to get a little training advice for my little boy. Recently, he has started to chase people when they walk. Sometimes he will just run ahead of them, growling, while others he will bite and hold on to the pant legs, also growling the whole time. He is 4 1/2 months old and I have no clue as to why he is doing this and what is the best way to approach this? Any light into this situation would be loved, thanks. |
My yorkie does the same thing she is going to be 3 months soon and she always does that. It gets annoying sometimes && other times she gets hurt. I don't know what to do either. Helllpp:confused: |
charlie does the same thing too |
That should probably be stopped ASAP before it turns into a habit. Granted, it could be just a puppy stage they are going through but you definitely need to stop it. Jackson has actually never done this (he's 5 mths) so I don't have any first hand experience but what I would do if he did.... I would definitely push him away, do NOT allow that to happen, let him know that you're the boss and you will not allow that kind of behavior. When he starts nipping and growling at pants, push him away and keep saying "no!" When he finally stops, give him a treat for doing the right thing. If that doesn't work - everytime he does it, simply pick him up and lock him in a room/crate/pen/something. Sort of like a 'time out' area. Take him out and if he starts at your pants again, repeat the same thing. Keep repeating until he does the right thing. Behaving properly = freedom & treats! |
my puppy does the same thing. lol. I just tell him NO and he stops. If he keeps doing it I just pick him up to let him chill and put him down and hes good. I steped on him onces:( cuz I didnt see him :( and since then hes been always watching my feet and doesnt get so close. ;) |
This can be dangerous because they can get stepped on aside from being as annoying as hell when he comes over and starts barking and growling Stop .... don't keep walking because the moving target is what he's playuing with and you say NO! when you have his attention resume walking .... but shuffle you feet this will serve two purposes It will push him aside and keep you from accidentally stepping on him keep repeating this same scenario everytime he barks and/or bites |
I'll have to try shuffling my feet, thanks. As for the stopping, every time I stop and wait until he sits. But as soon as I move away again, he's back at it... |
Just stopping is definitely not enough He's just going to wait until you start walking again You're making it into a waiting game for him and actually engaging his stalking instincts you have to break his train of thought and saying NO! or clapping your hands will stop him that much faster |
Thanks so much for your advice. He has mostly stopped pulling on the pant legs now but is still constantly running around growling  He likes to dart in front of you growling and then runs around, again growling. I am unsure as to what to make of this behavior or how to correct it since he doesn't stop now(before he stopped to bite on the pants). I've taken to calling him "rabid pup" now. |
Our Shih Tzu does this and he's 2 1/2. Make sure you nip it in the bud now or you'll end up like us!! He is much better now. We've started telling him NO very firmly, pointing a finger at him till he sits, then say, "Stay!" He doesn't do it all that often anymore but I'm sure it would have been easier to cure when he was a puppy. |

Hi Brenda, My Suzi does the exact same thing when she is very playful and excited. It's not funny.... BUT... IT is , in a way only because i am very aware that she is just playing.. so I try and distract her and give her something else she can play with instead of my clothes, a toy of her own, or one of her chew toys. If she persists , I will give a firm NO to her, and this will suffice. Suzi is now a yr old. Our Yorkies are naturally very spunky and love to play with us. Suzi does not usually growl at us , however, is a sock theif. We are not allowed to wear socks at out house ! LOL. She works hark at yanking them off each of our feet one at a time. Suzi usu to be terrible about grabbing our pants too. She's really become a lot better about not doing that anymore. |
Minnie had started that but she just like Bingo get's scared of my stern voice...lol so she stops and she don't continue to chew or tug on anything or anyone for long....Thank god I give her most of my attention when she is running around the house I whistle and call her name so she can come back to me...She like's to follow her big bro it's understandable but he don't like to be bothered...when she come's when I call her she sits and wait's for my response....most of the time she is away from me is either when she is eating or chasing her big bro....she don't have bad biting habit's luckily I do take her out even though she don't have all her vaccinations but I take her out for fresh air in my arms.... so she enjoy's that I play a lot with her and so does Bingo so she get's pretty tired.... they love and need a lot of attention they are just like human baby's... that's why I think it is great having two cause sometime's when I'm busy she is bothering Bingo and he is playing with her tiring her out... so it manage's well but all I can say is just play with him a whole lot keep him occupied as much as possible when u see he is doing something wrong turn his attention to something else and he will completely forget I do it with Minnie and he should be fine in no time but have patience and don't show him ur giving up cause he will just continue being a spoiled boy hope this helps:) |
