General Crate Questions/Leaving home alone Hey all, Recently purchased an adorable little yorkie boy. Still no name as of yet and its been 5 days hahaha! Anyways, back on topic. I'm trying to crate train the pup and he seems to be okay with his crate predominantly when he sleeps. i place him on my lap, pet him till he comes close to sleeping, then place him inside. Once I close the door to the crate, i just lie there for 2 min or so waiting till he lies down, and voila! He's out like a light. In the long run, should I be continuing this technique or not? Can I keep his crate in my room where he can see me? Also, when I leave the lil guy at home for a couple hours during the day, I place him at my front entrance of my house and put him in an open cage (roughly 3.5ftx2.5ft) with all his toys and beds etc. When I leave the little guy just doesnt stop barking, crying and he will not play with his toys, and I feel horrible. My front entrance is fairly large with doors which i can close to block off the rest of the house. Is it worth keeping him in the crate or just letting him wander around the entrance? A little guidance would be appreciated, Joe |
Hey and welcome! I think what you are doing by getting him to sleep and then putting him in his crate is great. I would also put it in my room so that he can see you, and most importantly, you can see him. These little guys are so small that anything can happen in the wink of an eye. I always tell my friends to do the baby test. Would you put your 13 week old baby in a crate downstairs, or in a room with the door closed by themselves? I assume we all know the answer is No. I guess since the entrance of your house can have all the doors closed off, it might just make it into a big play room. Sounds fun for him. Especially since you sound like it is already baby-proofed. Congrats on the new baby, and get us his name!!:) |
I've nver been a fan of locking a dog in a cage for any length of time. Just doesn't seem natural. Your entry would make a great play room while your gone and if he's pad trained it would be even better. My three sleep downstairs in the kitchen/breakfast area. They have their water, pee-pads, some toys and a their chews. Dogs don't go to sleep and stay asleep all night. They take naps, they play, they drink, then nap and so on, so the room is comfortable for them and they are much happier. We have the baby monitor so we can hear them if anything goes wrong. |
The only thing about putting them in a kennel for long periods of time is that it helps you with toilet training. Keep in mind that you don't start a new puppy to stay in a kennel all day. You start at a small time and work your way to longer and longer times. If your kennel is set up correctly it will teach them to hold their bladders longer until they can be taken outside. We did this with Reuger when he was little and he is completely housebroken. He has free reign in the the house when we leave for long periods now. Actually they can feel very secure in a kennel as opposed to an open room. Everybody has their own way of doing things though so do what is right for you. |
thanks for all the replies. another question. the little guy may be stuck at home for 5 hours tomorrow! can this cause any long term damage on his bladder if he cant go pee? im really worried. |

As for the first question: he will not hold his bladder at this age. If he has to go, he will. So I personally would put potty pads down for him. That way you get him trained to go on them now, instead of on your carpet later. The quicker you get him trained as to what is expected in the house, the better off you will be. I give my older girl free reign and she never disappoints me. Also if you live in the North, sometimes these guys will not go out in the snow. So training on the potty pad is very helpful. Secondly, he might not be playing, because he probably is sleeping. In my house when I go out, all the furkids sleep, and usually the skinkids also , that way when I come home everyone is ready to play. It sounds like you are really excited about the new addition. Wanting to learn about him, is the sign of a wonderful caretaker. Hoping the best for you and your new boy! |
