Walking Question!!! Ok so Finley wants nothing to do with walking. He puts on the breaks and whins. I really would like to take him for walks but I am not sure what to do. I don't have a harness yet, but does this help with making them walk. Now Finley is only 8 weeks, my husband says to wait a few more weeks. I just really want him to get him outside. I want him to get out some of his energy. What do you guys think? |
If you don't have a harness yet, I would not recommend walking him.. Using his collar alone could really hurt his little neck. Once you have a harness on him and he is outside it will be easier. He may need some time to sniff around and get comfortable. Lots of bug scary things outside especially for a young puppy. :) Once you and him are more comfortable just hanging out outside, you can sort of tug him when he's on his harness to get him going. Chances are, he's curious to see whats outside and around the block. Treats may help as well to get him to follow you. |
Walking 1 Attachment(s) You might get a harness first. Bella would do the same thing but you have to be presistance. In fact she was a scary cat. We had a home trainer who said its o.k. to kinda pull her once she gets the idea they will walk I tried it and now Bella when its walking time she goes to the door and wants to go. oh by the way we did this when she was 9-10monts. Hope this helps. Cheryl:animal-pa:animal-pa |

You should not walk finley without the harness however you stated that he is only 8 weeks old. it really is not a good idea to walk him outside he does not have his shots and his imune system is still weak. Please speak to your vet about bringing him out. What you might want to try is walking him on the leash with the harness in the house so he gets used to it. Some puppies take right a way to a harness and a leash others take some time to get used to it. |

Congratulations on your new baby!!! He will get used to the leash in time. He's still young and probably more interesting in playing than walking on a leash. Before you know it, he'll be begging to take a walk with you. |

I agree with the poster above. You don't know what you might be exposing him to unintentionally. I know you want to walk and show off your baby but doing so may cause him harm. I like the idea of training him to the harness inside and maybe you could do the walking and just carry him outside on your "walks" untill he has had all his shots. |

I wouldn't walk him outside at such a young age. I'd just keep him in my own yard until all of his puppy vaccinations are done. Definitely use a harness, and be patient! Missy didn't start going for walks and walking properly until this week, and she's 6 months and 3 weeks old. |
8 weeks old is too young to be even outdoors at all. Wait until this puppy has all his vaccinations . He is not ready to be out walking , or exposed to all tyupes of deadly viruses. i hope the rest of your dogs are up to date with their vaccines too. |
our breeder told us not to take our nwe puppy outside until he had his last set of shots...unless we were carrying him. We are so excited to take him out and let him explore, but we are waiting until he gets his last round of shots...its just not worth the chance for us (parvo, etc). I have tried putting a leash/collar/harness on him in the house and he HATES it....so Im sure outside is going to be quite an experience at first. |
