Scratching holes in the wall!! Ella has recently (within the last week) started digging at the walls in our entry. She's gotten through the plaster in two places. The first time, we had been gone for 12+ hours, so I thought she and Jack just got bored. But then she's done it in other places when we've only left her for a 2-3 hours. Does anyone have any ideas for deterring wall scratching? Bitter apple/clear deoderant don't seem like they would do very much because she isn't biting the walls (I know this because I checked out her nails and found plaster :thumbdown). We've been taking her for a 15-20 minute walk most nights, and it has helped--but it hasn't stopped it. Thank you--and my walls will thank you, too!! |
sounds like SEVERE separation anxiety. I think you should get a behaviorist in before she really hurts herself- they can dig long enough to start drawing blood- and if it goes on too long she can pass on the anxiety to your other dog. |
We've had Ella for 7 months, and she's been on her own during the day for a month now, but she only started the wall scratching within the last week. I though separation anxiety was more pervasive--not something she would have some days and not others. I think some of it might be the exercising. We had a cold front come through and didn't take her or Jack out for walks. Since the weather has gotten better, we're back on our walk schedule and she's been better. We've also picked up some more interactive toys for during the day and plan on letting Jack out of his pen to keep her company during the day. If anyone has experienced periodic wall scratching, share your secrets for stopping it! |
