sit training question. When i try to teach Scamp to sit with a small treat he tried to get the treat but jumping on me (chest if im sitting or legs if I try to stand) instead of getting in the sit position. If i try to slowly move the treat above his head he goes in a circle...lol. I have put my hand on his hindend and gently put him in the sit position while moving the treat to make him sit--then saying good sit and praising him and giving him the treat. What should I do to be more effective? |
Usually if the dog jumps, you are holding the treat too high. Try holding the treat exactly at nose level while he's standing, and then raise it just enough that you can start moving it back towards his ears. Also, you want to make sure he's not pulsating with energy during training sessions, so if you can, get him some exercise first. |
ok ill try making sure hes calm.....although...hes almost always hyper when hes awake.. and ya maybe I am holding it too high..ill try soon when he wakes back up. Thanks |
This is what you do .... I have a pup who wants to jump the gun ... so to speak too  Either sitting or standing say Sit ...... what helps is your hand movement hold the treat toward them first and then curl your hand upward this helps them to sit and not jump so much But ... if he jumps It's No .... and pull the treat away until he gets down and calms down repeat it again and again Do Not give him the treat without the sitting |
Im dealing with the same situation with my Minnie all she wants to do is play and just catch it while im trying to train her it is hard to get her out of the habit |
That's a good point, the hand command for sit will actually cause many dogs to raise their nose (which pushes their butts down). Extend the treat between your fingers, palm up, at nose level. Then curl your hand up and towards you like you are beckoning someone. Ideally, your dog naturally sits just by tracking the treat's movement. Ideally. :) |
Thanks...he did it!!! A few times....and I got him to go down too! Thanks again! |
