First trainings...for a new mommy to be! We pick up our little man tomorrow morning and I am so excited! He is 14 weeks old, We want to get started on the right fot so to speak. What should be the first things we teach him, in what order, and how...for a clueless but determined new mommy to be :) (i think i have a basic idea for sit..but beyond that Im clueless) I assume sit....stay, come...... or am I way off... for sit: did you just hold a treat and put it behind his head to make him sit while saying sit and give him treat and say good sit when he did or am I off base...If thats correct i think I have sit understood....how about the rest?? |
I was told to hold the treat just in front of their face, just above their nose and make an upward motion so they look up and their backsides go down for sit. For down, hold the treat the same way and make the motion to the floor and he will follow. The others are little more complicated and I either recommend a training book or classes. In class, I learned a lot about me as well as them. It's not just about the end result, it is about how to get there. Just remember, patience, it will happen. Good luck. :) |
use your leash hellooooo want to teach your dog real fast? this is what i learned from the professional dog trainer. use your leash with the commands. i think you got "sit" already, so here is down and stay! from sit position, have a treat in your hand and gently guide your dog to down position as you lower your treat and leash together. when down, say good girl/boy with upbeat tone! and give treat! if your dog "plays" along with you and associate the movement with the word "down". Say "down~" and lower the leash and treat. repeat about 5 times at a time. about 3 times a day. your dog now knows "down" :D here is the trick: make it a game don't make it boring. |
Sit is a great first trick! Jackson learned it after only a few tries. I just held the treat and softly pushed his bottom down and said "sit" and he learned after 5 tries or so. Down is not too hard either, I did the same basic thing where I would have a treat and after being in the sit position, I would take both of his front legs and sort of make him get down and say "down" and he learned that after a few tries. I've taught him shake, stay, come, high-five and we're still working on the "bang bang" play dead so far. There's a few sites online if you google dog tricks and you can find out how to teach them. |

oh! forgot the stay command. generally, i teach 1 command per day. you know puppy's gotta digest the knowledge! :) Once your dog knows sit/down, the next move is stay. and this command is my favorite and it impresses all of my friends! there are 2 parts to this command. 1. do command 2. release command 1. make your dog do sit, give treat. next say stay showing your palm like how you say "stop" to an incoming traffic at your face! you dog will think "what the heck are you doing" because you didn't teach the command yet! here's how you teach. if your dog tries to move, say "no or uh!" the moment your dog flinches. if you dog is up put the dog back to sit and say stay~ with your palm up. 2. to release the dog from the command, say "OK! or whatever you want with excited tone" and show a gesture to come with treat. I usually waive my arm inwards. Increase stay time gradually. =) key) say no or uh and stop the dog's movement from stay command as the dog flinches and put the dog back to stay position. you can do this with down position too. practice 5times at a time, 3 times a day, now your dog knows stay. |
