how to train puppy not to tug on leash i'm having the most difficult time training my puppy not to tug on the leash when we go out for walks. the minute i open the door to go out, he starts running off. he tugs so hard, that he starts coughing cause his harness is being pulled against his chest. when i take him out for walks people say he looks like a bunny cause he hops, when he's really just trying to run off. i want him to be able to walk by my side and not run. anyone have any ideas? |
Puppy school. If that is not possible, then: When he tugs, stop. Turn around. Ignore him. When he is quiet, start moving forward again. When he tugs. Stop. Turn around. Ignore him. Eventually he should get the idea that the only way to move forward (which is what he wants) is not to tug. If that does not work, and it takes much persistence, try a harness that attaches the leash on the chest rather than on the back. A Gentle Leader is one such brand, you would need to purchase the Petite size. This worked well for my girls. Just be careful as the swivel on the leash hook can get tangled up in the chest hair. I wrapped mine with some tape. Good luck. |

I have been having the same problem too and is looking to take Duke to classes soon. |
We had the same problem with Lucy, and it was easily solved. We bought a short chain leash (small sized links), and attached this to the harness, then attached the normal leash to the end of the chain one. This meant that if Lucy chewed / tugged, it would be on a chain (rather than fabric or leather) - and it certainly worked to stop her! (As a bonus, the chain makes the whole leash longer and more manageable). |
How did the chain stop the tugging? Because it was heavy? |
No, it wasn't heavy - but Lucy didn't like the feel of metal in her mouth, so stopped chewing and tugging at it. |
