Barking at Every Sound We had lived in a duplex for 3 months without the other side being occupied. Now that someone has moved in, our yorkie is having a come apart. Everytime they open or close a door, he huffs and barks. When he's not barking he's just staring into the corner where the sound came from. The same goes for when we are sleeping, he will sit up and start barking. I really have no idea of the best way to break him of this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
My suggestion (what works for Jackson and I learned on here) is to put coins/pennies in a can and whenever he barks, shake it and say "quiet!" The loud noise totally distracts their thoughts for what they're barking at. Keep a few cans with the pennies around the house so you always have one to grab. Now, if Jackson hears someone at the door, he will bark to alert me a few times and I say "Quiet" and he usually listens. Key word- usually. But we're learning still. The can really has worked greatly though. If that doesn't work, I've heard of spray collars. I think they spray water or something when the dog barks but I've never used though. Or a little sound thing that emits noise that only the dog can hear but humans can't -can't give you any info on those either though! |

Duke does the same thing also everytime my neighbors come and go. Since our front door are almost next to each other, I feel really bad especially in the middle of the night. Since my bedroom and kitchen are further from the door than the living room, I use the gate and gate him away from the livingroom so that he'll just stay with me during the nite. I also squeak a toy to get his attention when he barks. We also tried the coins in the bottle, the water spray versus the spray collar and none has worked with him so far. As you said this is something new ..... you didn't have neighbors making noise before He is just reacting to these new sounds and he'll likely settle down once he realizes that these sounds are just background noise What you can do in the meantime is accelerate this process when you hear a noise and he DOESN'T bark tell him what a good boy he is Don't scold because the heightened emotion feeds into his barking |
Thank you for your help. We were able to curb this for the most part by using the coin in can trick as well as catching him before reacting and giving him a treat :). |
Now that it's warm enough for the neighbors to come out she's pretty much non stop bark. The neighbors are going to hate her and that upsets me. |
