Thanks! I have been trying the treats the past 24 hrs and teaching him to stay until I pick him up and it seems to help. I haven't noticed the tail but will keep an eye out, good point. I don't think he's playing though cuz he just keeps running away when I approach him and doesn't stick his butt up in a playful way or anything. He came from a very well known breeder in FL, and as far as I know he was treated very well. I will definitely look into that book! Thank you all for your help! Kristin |
My 7 mo old Harley does it also. We forget how big we must look looming down on them. It's so cute because he runs away, and then when I go pick him up he turns and back up to me,for easy scooping ...lol |
Our 2 little ones do the same thing. Back up unless they want to be picked up. Our new mini schnauzer, Lexi, is just the opposite. She would stay in my lap if I let her. I can't even sit down because she is right there. She is jealous too of the little ones. |

I have a 7# rescue that does that so if I am sitting and she wants in my lap I just keep reaching for her till she lets me pick her up. Due to her past chasing her scares the crap out of her so we don't do it, not even to play. If I am standing and she does it, I do the same thing. If she wants me to pick her up badly enough she will stay still and let me. Also she will cower sometimes when I go to pick her up, also due to her past. I just pretend not to notice so I don't make a big deal out of it. I pick her up as usual and she's fine, we hope one day her fear and lack of trust will fade away. |

My Shelby Rae does that and we've had her since she was 6 wks old...now she is almost 12 and still does it... I think she may have been from a puppy mill since we got her from a pet store...anyhow when she does it I sternly say stop and she has learned to stop and wait then she does a little jump as I,m picking her up and I always hug and kiss on her and remind her that mama loves her and would never ever hurt her...she always gives me kisses then..I hope this helps you...I know it is frustrating because you love them so much and you want them to feel secure in that. |
