Name desensitization Can my dog become desensitized to her name? How can I keep this from happening? |
I don't really know the answer to your first question, but as to your second one... perhaps it would help if you only at first used her name when you are praising her or using it in some kind of positive way. And I'm certain it would be a good thing if when you say her name and she looks at you, you give her a treat or at least extra praise. That way she associates her name quickly and positively with looking to you and giving you her attention. Lauren & Nikko |
I agree with Lauren. Here's how: Take a treat and hold it down - the dog will look at the treat - but don't give it up. Then say his/her name -you're looking for a quick glance your way. The split second you see the glance then say "yes" or some other key word - then release the treat. The dog will associate his name with the treat. Good luck. |
This is good advice! We changed Molly's name and she is catching on (its been 2 weeks). She comes to us (for the most part) now. We will be working on this with a new furbaby this week, wish us luck! :) |

Make sure you don't repeat the dog's name whenever you call him That is a sure fire way to avoid name desensitization I love it when I go to someone's house or I'm at a park and you hear the dog's name again and again over and over and the dog is like .... ho-hum  doing whatever he was doing before This is a death knell to training because they will never listen to you When ever you call a puppy make sure they come to you ... carry something they like try not to call them when they are into something very interesting because you don't want to ever become the voice of Charlie Brown's teacher to your pup ... Bwaaah.... Bwaaah .... Bwaaahhh :D |
