Puppy not sleeping at night- Help!!! The first night was like heaven. She slept through the night and I actually woke her up at 8:00 because she was still sleeping and I was worried she hadn't eaten. Ate and went back to sleep until lunch. I think it was just the exhaustion of a new home. We have her in her crate as recommend by the breeder so that it would be easier to potty train. Next few nights only woke up once. Then she started waking up every 2 hours crying to get out. I would take her out and put her on the pee pad and she would turn around and walk back into her crate and go to sleep. Then she progressed to waking up every hour and doing this. I NEED SLEEP. What am I doing wrong? She has long naps in her crate in the day and crawls into her crate herself. She puts all her toys in their with her and her pillow. She actually likes her crate. What is upsetting her at night? Any suggestions to help her and me get some sleep would soooooooooooo be appreciated. |
awww new puppies are tough! Where is she sleeping? Is her crate next to you? Can she see you? If you know she doesn't have to pee- then she needs to cry it out- if you let her out when she cries- she will continue to do this all night every night- if she knows you are not going to give in- then eventually she'll stop the crying and go to sleep! Keep in mind- it can be months until she can sleep through the night without having to get up to pee- Layla was 8 months before she didn't have to pee at night. When she gets in the habit of sleeping and not crying- she will know to wake you at night when she does in fact have to pee! |
Make sure you have a small light on so she can see you. I would start putting her crate at the foot of the bed(dont kick her off) then little by little move her to the floor with the blanket over the crate, but leave the front open so she can still see you. That's what i did with my morkie cookie. Now she sleeps all night from 10pm to 6am. |
Maybe it is the dark because she seems to be fine during the day. She actually leaves me and walks into her crate to nap. She is by herself in the room during the day and doesn't seem to mind. At night I am next to her and she is waking up every hour. I tried leaving the door open but found poop around the room and one night I even found just smudges of poop and her face full of it so now I am freaked out that if I leave her on her own to wander during the night she will start this habit. I wonder also if its too quite at night because in the day when she is sleeping I always have the tv on or the radio so even if I am at the computer she always hears noise or voices. Should I have something on during the night? I am a light sleeper dont know if it will affect me but I would be willing to try. I think I am getting her into a habit. As for the letting her cry and not giving in, I've considered it but then I always worry what if she really has to go??? The majority of the time she doesn't but sometimes she does. |
try putting a small radio next to her very very low on lite music. She will like it and it wont bother you. Give her a small night lite and she should be fine. Good luck i know how hard it is at first trying to get used to their likes and dislikes, but it will get better, trust me! =) |
Oh the brand new puppy days!! This will take awhile, so have patience and try to smile through it all!! ;) A few things. Put your t-shirt you have slept in for a few days in her crate with her at night. She will smell you and ease her. How old is she? If she is younger she will need out about every 2-3 hours or so. If you ignoore her crying, it will teach her to hold it. Try to set a schedule for her and you so you know when to get up and she will get the hang of it. When she potties correctly, go crazy and give her a special potty treat. Never leave the door open to her crate at night, she will always potty outside her crate onto your carpet!! We did this for months and Snickers finally slept through the night at about 6 months old. Now I get my 8 hours of sleep. 1 other thing...Snick would never sleep through the night in his crate, he sleeps with us now and we have to wake him up. Not all pup parents want their pup to sleep with them but thought I would let you know what worked best for us. Good Luck...:) |

ok thanks for all the advice. will try some of your advice tonight and let you know how it goes. |
When I first had Jackson, I had to put the crate on the bed. He would wake up twice usually. Then I just began letting him sleep on my bed after a month and he slept through the entire night! LOL. It's worth it to sleep. |
Little puppies are like new borns ... They sleep for a few hours at a time and then wake up Dogs are pack animals and don't like being alone don't go to her everytime she cries ...that will just make her cry more for you make sure she has a warm soft blanket or pillow sometimes a hot water bottle helps a radio is good to so she feels like she is not alone also a item of your clothing so she can smell you is good there are always sleepless nights and keeping her active during the awake times will make her sleep better too |
SUCCESS!!! Ok tried a night light and also having the radio on low and she only woke up once at 4:30am and it wasn't to pee she just cried a bit and then I went to her and opened the crate door and she put her head down and went back to sleep. Thanks everyone for a good night sleep for both of us! :animal36 |
