Better to put pee pad in tray or litter box? Hi, My new baby girl will be coming home on Saturday - we're so excited!! I've been doing a lot of research on housetraining to prepare for her arrival and just need some advice. I know this should go under the "training" forum but I thought I'd get a better response here. I will be training with pee pads (the washable type) but do not want to place them directly on the floor. I'm hoping that by placing the pee pad in a tray or a dog litter pan the puppy will have an easier time distinguishing the difference between the floor and pad and also things will be kept neater. I was just wondering if anyone could offer their opinion as to which option might work better. Has anyone tried either of these options and if so, could you share your experiences? Thank you so much! |
I have a little Yorkie with no protal vein. Her shunt is what is keeping her alive. I don't let her go outside when it is really cold and have her wee pads in 3 different trays around the house for her to use. That way I can monitor her urine also. I got them at Petsmart. Tried the doggy litter first and she said NO WAY! Congratulations on your new baby! Oh, the joy of puppy breath! Debbie |
tray is what i use,works great! |

I bought several trays that were suppose to be for muddy boots, they were the perfect size, which a low lip, so there wasn't a huge step for him, about like a large cookie sheet. He never seemed to like them for peeing. At the time I was using disposables, and he would get on the tray and just lay down. He seem to think of the tray as a bed. |
I'd say tray! Definitely. I wish I started mine out on a tray, we're going to work on housebreaking soon. She constantly misses the pad and I've had to steam clean my carpet twice. I have to do it again because it smells so bad! I just havn't had the time. I'm thinking of getting a tray and seeing if I can get her to use it. |
I love the boot tray idea - I'm going to go out and buy one tomorrow. Sully keeps missing the wee wee pad too. |
At the home improvement store they have trays that go under washing machines. If you have the room that would be a great size. |

Using a washing machine pan is a great idea! I wish I had the space. I think I will give the tray a try since I already have it - I bought the one from Petsmart too. Hopefully she'll use it if I place her there consistently. It's nice to know the Arm & Hammer disposable pads are good. I have already purchased some from Target to use until I get the washable type. |
I use the tray from Petsmart to place the disposable pads in, and I also use washable one just directly on the floor. At first we were just placing the disposable ones directly on the floor when we first got Buddy, and then as we gradually decreased his pee area (we started placing several pads on the floor to cover a larger area), we started to use the tray, and it worked without a hitch. Now we only have the 1 pee pad in the tray. Good luck with the potty training! |
Useful Information: So far I've found that Walmart sells the cheapest weewee pads. $6.30 for a package of 30 pads! NICE! |
Christmas Tree tray My husband actually has a garden centre and they sell trays to put under your christmas tree stand to prevent water getting on your floor- it is square and the perfect size for the pee pad. It actually looks like it was made to measure- it fits so perfectly. I had started with a boot tray also but my little one likes more room to sniff around and circle before she actually goes. |
