Help!! Crate Training! I have an 8 week old yorkie and her name is Kami Chanel, I want to crate train here but to prevent her from going potty in it I would like to know what is the best size to get for her? Should I get the smallest size which is a 22Lx13Wx18H or the next size up 24Lx18Wx21H? Thanks |
I have read up a lot on yorkies and it is better to get them a small crate but one they can move around in a little bit. The reason is, they like to feel secure in a nice small area.:):):) Just make sure they can move around enough in it to feel comfortable. Hope that helps! ! ! ! |
We got our Lexi the smallest size. It seems to fit her fine and if she tops off at 10 lbs it would be ok. But I do wish I would have got the little larger one. Some of the wire mesh crates (which we got and I like very much) have a divider walls, so when they are really little you can put the wall in to keep the space smaller while they are being potty trained! Just ask at the pet shop and remember most stores will not let you return it so be sure you will be happy with it. And good luck with you new puppy!:) |

They say it should be big enough for them to stand up and turn around in, any bigger and they think of it as an apartment and not a bed, so they are likely to pee in it. If you have a crate that is too big some people put dividers in it to block off access to certain areas. Remember she can only hold it for 1 hour per month of age, so at her age 2 hours is the maximum time she can hold it. Don't withhold water, this doesn't allow the badder to grow and gradually stretch, it just causes reduced urine output which isn't healthy. Best of luck! |

When they drink slowly the bladder stretches slowly...the need to go comes on gradually and they learn to relax and hold it. This is also very handy when we travel by car, I can take water and not worry about it getting spilled. To train them to the bottle just put a small amount of Nutri-cal on the tip after filling it, when they lick the tip they get water...TAA-DAA |

Ten weeks is very young, 12 weeks is the minimum that the YTCA recommends, and she probably is missing her mom. Make sure the crate is comfortable with padding and blankets, I took a several blankets to the breeders and had her rub mama down with them, that way I had some scent of the mama at his new home. At night, I kept his crate next to my bed, and ours had a zipper that I could stick my hand in and sooth him, this seemed to help. Remember they can only hold their urine for 1 hour per month of age, so you do need to take her out and place her on a pad or outside, every couple of hours, and some crying is due to the fact that they have to go pee.
