Going nuts.....stress level at all time high. This is going to be a general list of Uno's problems with a bit of venting from myself. I apologize in advance, but I am going nuts with this naughtiness! Uno is 1 yr 9 months and still not fully potty trained. We have been doing the potty pad thing since I am a grad student and gone all day. There have been so many times we go for the looooongest streaks without an accident and then POOF! He pees and poops where he is not supposed to. We tried going outside in the beginning, then potty pads in the garage, then when it got to be -41 wind chill we kept him inside to pee (because that's just nuts to go outside!) Well Uno's newest "trick" is to see how many things he can mark and completely ignore the pad. I don't understand why it has gotten so bad lately. He started sleeping in my bed with me in December. He was perfect. Snuggled all night, peed on the pad in the hallway when he had to go. Then this morning I find pee on my carpet near a leg of my bed. I was furious. He has had so many accidents within the last month it's insane. He never used to mark. Now it's his new hobby. So....Problem #1: Marking. Next, he will shred anything. And I mean ANYTHING. My mother and I are unable to leave anything out because he will grab it, run with it, then try to destroy it. My mother let him into her room one morning while she was getting ready....Well, Uno found one of the only pictures of my mother pregnant with my sister in a multi-generation photo.....and shredded it. My mother was crushed....:( It was IN a photo envelope IN an organizer. He's frickin' houdini. This morning part of the newspaper was found shredded under the kitchen table (something shredded is found at least 4-5 days out of the week). The ironic part was it was an article about the woman that we took puppy training classes from :D Problem #2: SHREDDING EVERYTHING. Last (for this post anyway) and certainly not least, his whining. He will whine while I try to do homework, and when you say "No!" he won't stop. Usually whining won't stop until a toy is thrown. I know that I am responsible for all of his naughty behaviors, I just don't know what to do. I would love to be able to go to school and not worry about him, and not think about what kind of shredded surprise I will be coming home to. I get so jealous when I go to my friend's place and her dog can go leash free outside because she always comes back, doesn't go to the bathroom inside, and is so quiet and mellow. I want that...anyone know how to get it?? ~thanks for the vent session. |
#1, marking. Has he been neutered? Intact males will mark their territory. It tends to get worse as they reach full sexual maturity around two years old. #2, shredding. Al I can say is that you and your mom should be very careful not to leave anything valuable where he can reach it. #3, whining. He is trying to get your attention by whining. By giving in and throwing his toy, you are reinforcing his behavior. Make sure he gets plenty of play time before you sit down to do your homework, then ignore him if he does whine for attention. Is he crate trained? After he has had his play time, you can crate him while you do your homework. |
Yes to everything Ladymom said. Also, is your dog getting enough exercise and attention? Does he have enough toys of his own that he doesn't consider paper a legitimate toy? Try taking him to the park and playing fetch with him for a few hours. If he's well behaved when you come home, you have your solution. |
Often dogs that do those things are acting out in need of attention. Does he get a lot of exercise? Has this behavior just started or is it an ongoing thing? |
Sounds like Uno is in need of more exercise and stimulation.... As far as the marking goes males will do this it also sounds like you have tried many different training places and he's probably getting a bit confused outside gargage inside? If the place keeps getting changed he's not going to be able to figure it out Whinning .... is an attention getting device and it sounds like it's working he whines... you say no ... he whines some more and you throw him a ball If you want the whining to stop you keep doing your homework and if continues he goes in his crate or another room no more discussion or words |
