She used the potty pad!! I left for the gym this morning and went to take Cam outside to do her business before I left- well it was raining and she wouldn't consider going out so I just stuck her in the bathroom and put a potty pad in front of the door (where she usually goes if we leave her in there too long or if she's mad:cool:) And when I came home she had pee'd on it!! Okay, I'm like 99.999% sure it was an accident- she just happened to use it 'cause that's where she would have gone anyway... Anywhoo I praised her and gave her a treat. Did I do it "right"? And what do you think the chances are good that she might get the hang of this? Also- what is the best way to discourage or "punish" her when she goes on the carpet or in the house- not on her pee pad? Thanks for the help! |
Congratulations! I am going through trials and tribulations with pee pads myself, so I know how excited you must be. This is just my guess, but when I got Thor going on pads reguarly, he suddenly started peeing all over the carpet. I think he may not have realized the difference. Then I yelled at him for going on the carpet, and he almost killed himself trying not to use the pad. So I would suggest that unless you catch her in the act, don't "punish" her for pottying on the rug, because she may get scared to do it inside at all. If you catch her in the act, move her to the pad asap. I am going to get specially scented pads so Thor knows what to pee on. Other people get holders or use trays to distinguish them. Also, I blot each new pee pad with a bit of pee from the used one so that Thor has a marker. Let us know how it goes! I'm still figuring it out myself, so please share any tips you have along the way. |
I never punished to accidents. I just cleaned them up and ignored them. I always stuck to positive reinforcement. Any time mine went on the pad, we had a giant celebration with a food reward. Pretty soon, they will go over and pee a tiny spot on the pad to get your attention and get a treat. It really worked for mine. |
Thats how I got Jewels using the potty pad. She always went in the same spot on the carpet so I put a pee pad down there and she always uses it now |
Katy has been doing great with her pads, but now all of a sudden is confused. I have the pads in her exercise pen at one end. She is 14 weeks. I want to train her to use them all the time. I have two pads on trays. Any suggestions are welcome! |
Your baby is so beautiful. I am so wondering about color. She is black and tan with a reddish face at 15 weeks. I had her weighed today and she is 3lb and 5 oz. I figure about five pounds at adulthood?? what do you think?? |

Also, learn your pups habits and body language, you'll pick up on cues that will help you know when to scoop them up and take them to the pad. Keep treats by the pad so you can immediately reward a good potty. |

Aaaawe thank you!! She looked JUST like yours when she was a pup- almost completely black, she had a few brown spots I can't exactly remember where... some where along the way she turned BLONDE! Her face is still brownish red, but her back is dark at the roots and almost completely silver. When I get home I'll try to post a full picture of her for you. She is 4 years old now and is just under 5 pounds...I just discovered this forum so I'm still learning a lot about Yorkie's in general so I don't think I should tell you that's what to expect but that's how mine turned out!! And ornery as ever...lol!! Thanks everyone for the advice! My hubby thinks she should be punished, but I can't stand doing it I feel so terrible about it- I think I like your ideas better!:D I'm also thinking I should get one of those trays, right now her potty pads are in the bathroom which is tile so it will probably confuse her if I put one in the hallway where she likes to go on the carpet:mad: |
