Crate at night I wonder if anyone can help me. I have a Yorkie that will be 6 months old on the 12th of this month. She lets us know when she has to go out during her waking hours. I crate her at night. When I get up in the morning to take her out before I go to work she has already messed in her crate. I put a blanket in half of the crate so if she messes she would have a place to go. (The crate has a drop pan). Here's the problem. Sometimes she will mess on her blanket. I know dogs don't mess where they sleep but she does and I am beside myself with this.:confused: I have had 2 other Yorkies and neither one ever did that. Her crate is big enough for her to stand up and turn around. There is not a night that goes by that she doesn't mess in the crate or on her blanket. Please, anyone have any suggestions? I take her out before we go to bed at night. Thanks in advance for your help. |
Try picking up her food and water at least 1-2 hours before bedtime and take her out before you go to bed. Someone else was having the same problem and they put down a pee pad and somehow elevated the bed just a little bit in order to cut down on the washing. I would also suggest trying a doggie door in your room where you can open it at night if needed and leave it closed during the day. We have one that fits in our sliding galls door and although I don't like them using it during the day when we aren't home I do use it at night. During the day I worry they will have too much free time to get out of the fence or be stolen so I close it off and they do fine. At night I just open it just in case...our youngest seems to always to have to go at around 4:00 am, plus I weekends when I want to sleep in I love it! well for min i feed him his food once at 6:30 am and then again at 1PM he usually eats everything at the time i put it out so i make sure to take away the water a few hours before bedtime not just 1 or 2, are you taking out your puppy like every 2 hours? and the later you take him out at night the better. |
The problem is she has too much room- Dogs WILL poop where they sleep if there is enough room to poop and lay down. You need to shove something like towels or pillows in the back of the crate so you only give her enough room to lay down and turn around. This is how she will learn to hold it over night. At first she will wake you at night to go out but as she gets older she will be able to hold it and you will be able to give her more room. |
My 3 babies all sleep together in the same large crate. No matter how many times I take them out and keep them from water and food they go potty in the crate. I put a pan with the puppy pad in the crate and at least they use the pad instead of their bed. Betty |

I am right there with you. It is very frustrating. Bella does awesome during the day in and out of her kennel. But she has never let us know when she needs to potty while in her kennel. She goes right to bed at night, has never cried or anything in her kennel. I get up with her during the night to take her potty,but it never fails that I wake up in the morning and find she has messed in there, okay, not EVERY morning, but most. Never pees in there...Its always poop:eek:. I have tried feeding her earlier, taking up food and water, everything, and she still messes in there. She is still only 13 weeks old. I just wish you would atleast let us know she needs to go. I would be happy to get up and take her out as long as she didnt poop on her blankets. I am washing them every morning it seems:rolleyes:....Hopefully someone on here will have some answers.. |
Well Lestat is 8 months old and he does not seem to mess in his crate anymore, but when out of his crate unless i'm taking him out every 2 hours he still has not learned how to tell me when he needs to go i still find him wet sometimes and i know he had pee'ed some where he rarely poos in the house. |

maybe an x-pen Maybe an x-pen would work out for you. Does she use potty pads? If she does, you could put her bed on one end and the potty pad on the other. I know people say that dogs don't mess where they sleep, but some apparently do. Just a thought--I'll wait and see what the more experienced people on here think.:rolleyes: |
Alex sleeps with me. He wakes me up at around 4 to go potty, I bring him and then we go back to bed and he sleeps the rest of the night. During the day I have him in a big wire crate in my livingroom with his bed on one side and his pad on the other (I only put him in there when he needs to sleep) He has never pottied in his bed or my bed. When he is out he runs to the pad. I have only had him for a week so I would rather him close to me a night. |
I don't trust my Abby to sleep with me yet. I am quite upset right now as someone said to me about her messing where she sleeps, "Oh that is not a good sign. I hope she isn't going to be a dirty dog." Am I dense or what? I really don't know what this person meant and I'm a bit upset. I have had 3 Yorkies and never had this problem. If she needs to potty at night she can walk off of her blanket and go so I don't know why she messes on her blanket. If I spead her blanket out more she would still potty on it.:( |
