Potty Deterrent I know this question has been asked here before, but is there anything that works? I've had to remove every little rug from the house and put up a gate so that Layla can't ever get into the carpeted basement. The problem is we have a large area rug under the kitchen table. Not only does she pee on it, she also poops on it. She poops on it about 85% of the time, but maybe twice a week she'll poop on her pad. I have been around a few times to catch her using the area rug, and I immediately say NO, pick her up, and take her to her pad. If she finishes on the pad I praise and treat. I have spot cleaned the rug, but it doesn't seem to matter. I spot cleaned the whole basement, plus steam cleaned the carpets numerous times, and it seems to be just the fact that it's carpet that makes her want to go. Is there ANYTHING I can do besides getting rid of the carpet? She is not a puppy anymore, she is 3 and a half years old. When she WAS a puppy, the carpet was really not a problem for her. I don't know why it is now! But I can't take her anywhere without being pretty sure she will pee if we're in a house with carpets or rugs. |
Mine were doing this on an area rug that I had in the dining room so I put a pee pad there and they started using it. They dont have accidents in the house anymore since I did that |
My daughter bought a pommie, she is 2yrs old and came to us with the same problem. We put her down and would wait for her to go to the carpets and squat. Then we scold her and put her outside. We got her in December and now she is so much better about telling us she needs to go out. You really have to be on alert. If you can't watch them put them in a crate. Also, use a carpet cleaner that is made for dog urine....If she smells even a hint of pee she will still think it's okay to go there....I hope this helps!!! |
Oh btw...:aimeeyork:aimeeyorkyour baby is gorgeous!!! |
Thank you! I did use a cleaner that was supposed to get rid of pheremones, I found it at Petsmart. I used it throughout the basement, especially in her spot right at the bottom of the stairs. It didn't help at all, so for now she's banned from the basement. I think I will try putting another pad near the table. I liked having just her ONE potty spot (which is only about 20 Layla-sized steps away!) but hopefully this will help. I did have TWO pads in the basement when she was allowed down there, but she rarely went on them at all. |
Oh yeah... and isn't it weird for dogs to pee and poop where they eat? Her food and water area is set up right beside the rug  and she will always take each peice of kibble back to the rug to play with it and eat it |
we found URINE OFF worked best. it gets rid of the uric acid. It comes with a black light that you use to find the pee spots you didn't know were there. my dogs dont go back to that spot after using the urine off. But they have on occassion peed in new spots.....sigh. I have to remember madison is still a baby ( 8 mos). We are training to go potty outside. Madison is now using the doggie door and I think having an older sister is helping. But I don't want my house to smell like dog pee, so I'm always on the look out for what works best. I hear ceasar millan has a good carpet cleaner on qvc too. |
