Commands/Tricks: Is she learning at a normal speed? So... I've never had a dog before (or ANY PET for that matter) so EVERYTHING is new to me, especially training. So I'm wondering if my puppy is learning at the right rate. I can't help feeling like I'm not putting enough time into teaching her. And that it's making me feel really bad. She'll be 12 weeks old on Tuesday and I've had her for 5 weeks TOMORROW. I know the breeder did not teach her ANYTHING or even try housebreaking any of the litter. So I've had to start from scratch. Like I said, tomorrow will be 5 weeks that I've had her and she has only MASTERED a couple commands; "sit", "come", "up" (she stands on her back legs), "get back" (she either takes a couple steps back or hops back once), "off" (she takes her paws off whatever she was up on), and "spin". She knows her name and what "NO!" means. But that's pretty much it. She still does not know even really simple commands like "down" or "stay" or anything else. I watched a video on YouTube, this girl had a 12 week old puppy who could do all that plus ring the potty bell, roll over, play dead, and some other things. I read that Yorkies are supposed to be really smart and catch on really quickly. And my Lexi does seem really smart, but from seeing that video and I know one person that has a Yorkie too, those 2 sources are making me feel like I'm not putting enough time into helping her learn since those 2 dogs are so much more advanced than my Lexi. I'd love a little input from you all. Maybe if I hear from more than two sources about this I might feel a little better. Hopefully she is learning at a normal speed, I just don't know... How many commands, tricks, or words did your puppy know at Lexi's age? How often should I be working on training with her? Or any other advice is appreciated : ) Thanks! |
When Maximus was a puppy, we taught him one trick per week. We wouldn't move on, unless he had mastered it. We got him at 8 weeks, so at 12 weeks, he probably had learned 4 tricks. Your pup seems to be doing great! :) |
