Someone please help...:confused:Okay here is the problem I just recently bought a Yorkie. She is about 9 weeks old.. She came from what you can call a puppy mill.. So its really hard to train her. I think she is getting confused as to where her bed is? 6:00am I wake up take her to her wee wee pad to do her business then I leave at about 6:45 to work. I return home at lunch time to check up on her because she's so little. So I come at about 12:00pm clean what she's dirtied... Get home at about 4:15 or so. My problem is that since I know she is so little I'm scared to crate train her because I know they can't keep it in for so many hours. So I leave her in a baby yard where she has a little bed and her toys and her weewee pad and food. BUT at night when I put her in the crate to sleep I wake up in morning and she had pee'd inside of it. Could it be that she getting confused since she sleeps in a comfy bed while I'm at work.. What should I do :( |
I'm wondering how big a crate you have her in? Maybe she needs a smaller crate so she doesn't go in the crate. Have you read much online about crate training? There are some really helpful sites - although, I have never had the puppy mill issue addressed - perhaps that is addressed out there. I think you might be onto something though, if indeed she was raised in a cage or crate. Is she using her pad when she is in the play yard? If she is, then maybe you should be placing her in their at night too. Maybe someone else will have more experience with this |
Though she might be a puppy mill pup, she is so young that you should have no problem training her correctly. At 9 wks, you shouldnt expect too much and it'll be quite sometime before she gets it. The important things is to be consistant with your training. I too kept my furbaby in a baby play pen at that age. And, she would go and use her pee pad just fine. The key is that when your pup poops in a different spot...you should pick it up and put it on the pad. They say that helps them know that the pad is where they should use it. I didnt crate train at that young of an age..so I wouldnt know what to say on that. Except that "yorkiesmiles" is correct in asking about the crate size. because it could be that its too big. |
Also, are you trying to get her to hold her bladder throughout the entire night? She probably isn't able to hold it for that long. Plan to wake up 1-2 times throughout the night to let her out. Set your alarm, or try attaching a little bell to her collar so you can hear when she is awake. Also, make sure the blanket you have in her crate isn't white or any light color so she doesn't confuse it with her pee pad. |
Hello...welcome!! My Snickers is from a puppy mill and was very hard to train. I got him at 8 weeks ! He was such a tiny thing!! During the night, you MUST get up about very 1.5-2 hours to take her out to pee. She will not always have to go, but you must give he the chance. Are you keeping a puppy pad in her crate? If not, take her to her pad, you can keep one near her crate. Be sure the crate is in your bedroom and that it is small. Snickers crate is still small, he will not dirty it. Small meaning, she can lay, turn around, and stand in it. If the crate is in your bedroom, she will cry when she wants to pee. I would also crate her during the day, she is young and will mess her playpen b/c there is no reason for her to hold it. She can pee on 1 side and play on the other, if in crate, she will learn to hold it. Hope this helps...best of luck...Snick is now 7 months and is doing great with his potty training, we take him outside and he gets a venison treat which he would die for Make sure her reward for potty is a good one! String cheese and butterscotch chips also are great! |
my 8 month old yorkis still has accidents and didnt crate train her she is still very young so dont worry she will get into a routine mine dideven though it felt like forever |
I appreciate everyones responses. I am going to have to get up in the middle of the night to let her out. I hope that helps. I tried cleaning her kennel as much as possible but I'm afraid that she will still be able to smell her own pee pee... Any ideas on what I should clean with? I'm really looking forward for her to go outside... LOL!!!:D |
Make sure you use an enzyme-based cleaner. Look at a pet supply store. If you can't find any, use a vinegar-water solution. Do not use an ammonia-based cleaner as the ammonia smells like urine and will only encourage the dog to pee in the same spot. |
Thank you so much I'm gonna have to wait to buy that tomorrow night.. I'm gonna try everything I can. I'll be on soon for advice on outside training... |
As a breeder I can relate to your problem, and the idea about a smaller crate is a good place to start. Be patient though because she is still very very young and it is going to take some time. Usually I have found that my babies learn to use the wee wee pad from their dam and the other adults in the house, unfortunately your little girl was taken from her dam to early and never had a chance to finish the learning process. That being said you are going to have to take over where mom left off. Don't expect too much from her and there is a good chance that you are looking at up to three or four months before she starts to get things right. There are going to be days when you ask yourself " what was I thinking" but don't lose faith all good things come to those who wait, and the happiness and joy she is going to bring you will make all of the mistakes she makes worth wild. As for a cleaning solution: When it comes to my puppies and trying to cover up any scent left behind after I've cleaned, I will only use Vineger and maybe alittle bit of lemon juice in it mixed with water. Don't use too much vineger though as it can be pretty strong for little noses. I wish you the best and if I can be of any help feel free to ask. If you want to talk to me you can find my phone number on my website. Just tell me your from YT. |
Thank you so much. So I woke up last night twice once at 1:30 because I heard her walking around and again at like 3:30... Well she pooped n pee'd but now my dilemma is that she is missing COMPLETELY the weewee pad.. Everyone is saying I shouldnt expect to much from her so I'll hang tight until she learns. I'm enrolling her in puppy education at Petsmart. What are your reviews on it. Is it a waste of money? |
I know all puppies are different, but my Capone has an exercise pen with plenty of toys that he never minds playing in. I used to put a pee pad in there so he could potty in it, but suprisingly he never used the bathroom in it at all. He sleeps in it too and thats where he is when no one is home with him. I think he doesn't potty in it because he plays and sleeps all over the whole pen. I think your puppy is peeing in the middle of the night because it can't hold it overnight yet, like others have said, put your puppy in a crate and when he starts going crazy (should be pretty loud) put him on the pad and when he's done give him a treat. Good Luck! |
When I got Penny... I got her a big crate...I put her bed, toy, food & water, and a pee pad in there.. I worked at the time too.....Now she is a yr old...(She was 8 weeks when I got her)...And she loves her crate...she goes there for her quiet time ...on her own... I put her in the crate when I was at work and when I wasn't home...I was too scared to leave her out...She is pad trained so I still keep a pad in there for her...and one in the living room... I also put towel on top so she felt a little closed in and safe....but she also has slept with me since I got her.... We just got a new baby (6 mos.) she is outside trained..was when I got her..so I don't put a pad in her crate...because she won't use it... Sorry so long.... :) |
Penny had accidents too...Until she learned that is where I wanted her to go...she did however use it in her crate... I think that is how she got used to the pee pads....having one in her crate....Your baby is young....Take it slow she will get it...I think a crate with a pad will teach her....JMO.... :) Also she is young...Keep some Nutracal on hand.... :) |
Do you think its a good idea to put a pee pad inside the kennel with her I'm afraid that she will think its where I want her to go peepee and I don't. At first I was scared because I thought she didn't want to use the pad because when I brought her home since it was a 3 hour drive I had a pee pad on my lap so I was worried that she would think its a bed for her. But now my new dilemma is that she is eating her own poop only when I'm not around because when I am around I catch her and take it and dispose of it. My vet recommended Deter because I've tried Pineapple juice even pineapple chunks and that didn't seem to work. |
rather young or not...i am a strong believer of crate training...you may want to give that a shot...and being so tiny i think it would be a lot safer for a her...think about what could happen when you are gone is really scary |
The dog isn't left throughout the whole house its confined into a play yard. So she is boxed in with her pee pad/food/bed. Only thing that in there is her kennel. What I need to learn is how to crate train... The steps of doing it. |
My Sophie and I are in puppy school at PetSmart currently. We just completed week 5 of 8 weeks. This is a good school. It teaches you basic, but important commands and it also helps to socialize the dog. Sure, there are some things that are taught that applicable to Sophie (large dog chasing squirrel and tearing your arm out of the socket so here's how you should hold the leash) but I take what they teach and apply it accordingly. This is my very first dog, my very first puppy and of course, my first Yorkie. It's been a good experience for both of us. She gets so excited as soon as we walk throught he doors of PetSmart that she shakes with it. It's really cute and she loves all her new little friends she has met. I recommend it. Could I have taught her all this on my own? Sure, but she enjoys the other dogs. Enjoy! |

Good Morning All, I wanted to give you guys some updates on how my weekend went with my little princess. So Friday night. I had susanldm advice in mind. I put her right next to my bed. Only thing I didnt do was put her in the kennel what I did was put her in her bed that she sleeps with during the day. Its like I had an alarm clock everytime I heard her move I'd wake up.. So I woke up at about 2am took her out to the pen to do potty she did it. I was so proud. Then off to bed again. Then again at 7am on Saturday she tinkled then off to bed again. Wasn't til yesterday since it was such a beautiful day out we took her outside to the yard. There is a dog next door to me that was there and she was just so happy to have a friend. She actually went poopy.. I wasn't personally there because I had to run errands but hey my boyfriend took pictures LOL!! So since I'm on sequence I wake up for her without having to put her in the kennel. Tonight I'm gonna try to put her in the kennel but keep her near my bed of course and continue to wake up to take her out. What do you guys think? Am I doing everything good so far? Have in mind this is my very first puppy and I'm just so eager to have her learn.. :animal-pa:animal-pa:aimeeyork Also I like to add I enrolled her in puppy education in Petsmart I can't wait to go to our very first class.:p |
I think you're both doing great! Hope things go smoothly this week |
Glad things are going much better. Well if she sleeps ok in the bed thing and doesn't get up and wonder about then I think that is great she sleeps that long and then goes pees for you. I think it is all trial and error with these dogs. Try something and see if it works if not try something else. At least that is my approach because alot of things people have said to try about the nipping and biting and barking thing none of them worked for me. I tried and tried. I really worked at it for weeks and they didn't work so I had to find other ways. So every dog is different that is for sure. I too started taking my little puppy outside yesterday and he loved it and peed. I also took him to the park to walk with me today he really liked that alot. The weather is just so pretty out there. I can't wait till it stays like this so I can take him out alot more. My classes start tomorrow with him at Petsmart. I can't wait to see what happens. When does yours start? I wish you the best with your training as well. God Bless! Keep up the good work. |
