YT newbie with puppy that barks when we leave ROP Everytime the BF and I leave the house, our yorkie cries and barks for a good 20 minutes. I've tried leaving her favorite toys and chew treats, but this doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions or help? Thanks in advance! |
This is what helped us....your yorkie needs to be reassured that you are comeing back so if you practice this excersise it should help. Try leaving for a few min. and come right back in gradually increase the amount of time, and change up your routine if you put your coat on first try grabing your keys. Yorkies are very smart they will pick up your habits quickly. If you continue with this excersise you will notice a difference in a few days. What I would do was practice during commercials on TV and do it as many times as possible. Now Milo dose not even blink when I leave because he knows I am comeing back. |
I put the radio on for my boys when I leave the house.... it took about a week but definately seems to calm them! Welcome to YT!!! |
i put the tv on for lexi every single day for her...she like the cartoon network. be patient.. it will work out.. they all do that |
Dogs are not good alone ... they are naturally pack animals and are never alone in the wild so we are going against what is natural for their behavior when we leave them alone What you need to do is treat your leaving as if it is just another part of the day no kisses no bye byes just leave ..... any attention at this time calls attention to the fact that she is suddenly all alone Radio TV does sometimes help for puppies .... an item of clothing that smells of you sometimes comforts them dogs are also den animals and it sometimes helps to have a crate or a small space the puppy can climb into instead of having the run of a large area |
Thank you to everyone who offered suggestions! I tried a few of them and she has been doing MUCH better! I'm so excited and again I appreciate all of the comments! |
alone time here's what i do with kayden... she stays in the bathroom and hallway when we're gone...blocked off by a gate. i put her gate up and fix 'her room' while she watches. i put her toys, bed, crate, food, and water in while she watches. i always hide a treat in her bed and crate. she actually cries to get in now...it only took a couple days of this. i leave a radio on in the bathroom...and the hall light on so it's not too dark. then i get my things gathered up for work an put my coat on. as soon as she sees this...she gets soooo excited. i don't make a big deal of leaving...just pick her up...give her a quick smooch...an set her in 'her room'...as i say 'ready to go to your room?' it's a routine...and she has it down. she never cries...in fact she's happy when this all goes down. i also don't make a big deal when i come home. i set all my things down while she's still in 'her room' and then i undo her gate and let her out. hope this help you. good luck kelli |
Don't worry...it took my Tiffany about a month to adjust to me leaving her when I got her at 3 months old. I would even tape record her when I left to see how long she would bark. Eventually, she would bark less and less. Now, she doesn't make a sound when i leave. :) |
