leash training so, i've tried it with my two babies, Waldo and Duey, they are 15 weeks. Waldo hates it, Duey Freaks out!! what the best way to go about the leash training? Thanks all!! |
Layla was SO hard to leash train- wait do you mean just walk on a leash or teaching "heel"? Layla would never heel- and her trainer said that was fine- small dogs have probably been accidentily stepped on (yup that's Lay) so she is naturally scared- but as long as she would loose leash walk next to me. that was fine. |
i mean to just walk on the leash. they just sit, and i don't want to drag them. i try to walk in front of them and encourage them with treats but they won't budge. |

Gracie was like that at first but finally got used to it. First I would suggest a harness instead of a collar. Yorkies are prone to tracheal collapse so tugging on a collar can be dangerous. I would give Gracie a very gentle tug and encourage her to follow me and kept the leash time very short but frequent until she got used to it. They just don't understand what is going on but eventually it sinks in. Sometimes it helps to use an excited voice to encourage them. And with one of my dogs I would throw a toy a few feet for her to chase. I did this all the way around the block. I'm sure my neighbors though I was a weirdo!!! Good luck. |
Like Joanne said, I would first get a harness. If it is a collar, they may not like the feeling they're getting around their necks....their necks are so very, very fragile. Collars are fine for dog tags, etc. but not for leashes. You may also want to start putting the leash on them in the house and let it stay on for a few minutes several times a day...even let them drag it around for a few minutes. This will at least get them used to the leash....then gradually take the outside with it. Best of luck! |
