Collar issues Help! I can't get Rocky used to wearing a collar or a harness and I really want him leash trained. My 1st attempt turned into near nightmare. He worked his mouth under the collar and was yelping dramatically. OMG I couldn't get the little bitty snap enclosure undone and was going into panic mode. I was heading for the scissors when I finally got it. Okay that was enough for the both of us. About a wk. later I tried again making sure the collar was tighter this time (index finger tight). Same blooming thing only this time was worse because it was tighter. I thought maybe the slide adjustments were loosening so I bought a buckle type collar. No luck. Tried a harness same results. Is he just to little? He's working that bottom jaw under these things. I would really love to get him leashed trained. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. |
Hi, You need to assosiate the collar and harness with good things. The collar should fit with two fingers comfortably underneath and should be used for ID purpose only not to attach the leash( there throats are two fragile always walk on a harness) if you have someone that can help you find a treat the dog really likes and will do anything for it place it in your hand and hold it infront of the dog letting them lick or snifff it have someone else put the collar on the dog. After the collar is on give the treat let the dog wear the collar around the house (only when supervised and not in crate, always naked in crate) leave it on for about 5 min. and remove keep repeating the excersie and increasing the amount of time with the collar then add in a harness using the same tecnique. It takes time, patience and perservernce but you can do it. |
Thank you for your reply. I'll give that a try, he does love his treats. |
