Cleaning old accidents on the carpet? I've found evidence of accidents on the carpet that I think are pretty old. Molly (almost 2 yrs) has been given free rein of the house for quite a while now, and I haven't caught her peeing on the carpet in several months (pooping is another story, but easier to clean). For new accidents I've always used Petzyme and it has worked wonderfully. Then I happened to find one older accident, then used the blacklight to see evidence of others. I tried Petzyme on the old spots and it might have taken some of the odor away, but not all. I then tried my green machine with the Pet Odor solution and I still smell it. Any other suggestions? Carla |
I use Nature's Miracle, but to do a really thorough job you may need to get your carpets steam cleaned. |

This will sound crazy but Frankie had a accident (was not urine) and I had nothing to remove it so I used a bottle of listerene and it worked no stain no smell just minty fresh |
If Nature's Miracle doesn't work for the smell, I would have to go and say you probably want to get professionals to come clean your carpet. If you ask (the ones I use at least), they have a special enzymatic cleaner they use for pet stains. If that doesn't do it though, then it's definitely gone beneath the carpet . Hopefully that's not the case though....this thread reminds me that it's time to get my carpets cleaned too!! Good luck! (My mom is having the SAME problem with her cat, and is not sure what to do...unfortunately it's on an oriental rug at her house :() |
I tried alot of things-no luck! We actually took up our carpet in the living room today & are getting wood put down!!! Good Luck!!!;) |

The breeder where I got Fiona from, she useds PERXIODE on everything, and it does help, and covers up the smell! :animal-pa |
I always use "FOLEX" on pee and then follow up with "Oxy clean" mixed with water in a spray bottle. Spray Folex, aggitate with fingers, blot with towel. Spray oxy, aggitate with fingers, blot. No stain, no smell. We have a lot of tile. Carpet in a few rooms. I can't wait til we can get tile everywhere. I HATE carpet. |
The best thing I have found for cleaning my carpet when there is an accident on it is Lysol Kitchen Cleaner. It works wonders, trust me I have white carpet and a bushel full of Yorkies running around the house. And best of all it isn't real expensive, I even mix it with my carpet shampoo when I clean my carpets. It even leaves a pleasant smell in the room and I have never had one of my Yorkies (adults or puppies) get sick from my using it. |
Folex? Never heard of it..... What is it and where do you buy it? Thanks Lora |
Thanks! Zoeybear, what is Folex? NDYorkiemom, do you mean the spray Lysol Kitchen Cleaner? I think I have some of that under my cabinet now. With the color of our carpet (I'm having stained concrete in my next home!), the stains aren't obvious. They are nothing compared to the stains from kids. I'm just worried about the smell. You can't smell them unless you get right down on them, but I don't want the smell to get out of control. Thanks to all who've responded! Carla |
and Dara... Thanks for the peroxide suggestion. I'm going to try that as well. I've got enough spots to go around for all of the suggestions...ha! |
Carla, yes the Lysol used for cleaning your kitchen, comes in a white spray bottle. It works wonders on white carpet, spray the spot good and scrub making sure to turn your rag so your not just rubbing it in. Then spray a second time (you don't have to soak it heavy) let it stand for about thirty seconds and rub the area again. This should remove the spot and oder, it make take more than once if the spots are really heavy. |
I've found that the Pet Odor Solution isn't very good at taking the smell OR stain away. I have a Little Green Machine too and have given up on that. We really like the Woolite Oxy Deep Steam Home Carpet Cleaners, Carpet Cleaner and/or just plain old OxyClean works great too (on stains, especially!). |
