Litter Training Puppy's (anyone?) Is there anyone that litter trained they babies? |
I don't know about litter, but alot of the yorkies here are pee-pad trained. |
Geez I tried it and it did not work. I don't know if it was the feel under his feet of what but he didn't want any part of it. In the beginning when they tell you to use newspaper etc... well Coop thought he should take a nap in there. I have several funny pic of him sleeping in the litter box. I loved the concept etc etc. but not this Yorkie. He still isn't always trustworthy. and he is 1 year old. SO good luck, let us know how it works |
I trained my yorkie on wee wee pads and she has done FABULOUS. She runs in the room where her pad is and uses it. She is 12 weeks and is 98 % housebroken. I have a trainer that comes and works with us on other things and she cannot believe it. However, since I got her about three weeks ago, I totally devoted my time to housebreaking. I want her to use the pads permanently. She has to be the most adjusted puppy I have ever seen. Sleeps with us every night.. LOVES her toys. |

When do you get your baby? How old is baby? We got Katie at 10 weeks and I just totally devoted all of my time to training her. I let her play downstairs but never ever leave her unattended. My husband and I both watched her and every 30 - 40 minutes we would put her on her pad in her ex pen. Now, I can leave the gate open to it when we are at home. She goes in and gets in her bed to sleep during the day.... They are SO much fun! |

I would definitely train on wee wees as I see you live in Wisconsin. Keep me posted when you get her. It's like getting a new baby. It's just my husband and me and I am retired so we do not have children at home so she is truly our baby. Let me know when she comes home. |
I start all of my babies on wee wee pads and then train them to the litter box, I still keep pads down for the little ones just in case of an accident though. Training them to use the litter box really isn't that hard, its just time consuming in the begining. When you first get up in the morning and before you go to bed at night be sure and put them in the box and wait, gently talk to them but don't let them get out of the box for at least five minutes. If you should find an accident somewhere in the house you have to pick it up and place it in the litter box. If you should happen to catch them in the act of a no no then gently pick them up not scolding and never saying bad, carry them to the litter box and place them in it. Once they get the smell of other accidents in there they start to get the idea quickly. I have 14 Yorkies and all but the very young puppies use a litter box, it sure cuts down on the laudry in a big way. The secret is you have to be persitant just like you have to be when wee wee pad training. |
litter training worked for us I have 3 and they were potty pad users at first. I started with a thin layer of litter under and around the pad in the puppy litter box. They have boxes that are a little larger than cat pans and have a part of one side that is lower or a dropped down edge for the dog pans. I slowly added more litter every ciouple days and they made the adjusment. now I no longer use the pads which saves money and the litter is easy. In Michigan there are days that are soooo cold they really do not want to go outside can you blame them!?! Good luck it was worth the effort |

I total understand how you feel. You live up north also, in wisconsin to be exact. You never know what the weather is going to be like the next day. haha |
With my yorkies the oldest was 4 years and the other was about 9 months when we started the switch...you can teach an old dog new tricks! I also have a rescue Papillion and she was approx 4 years so it seems to be an easy adjustment for the three of them. |
