I have pee pads around, ive cleaned my carpets to get out the smell.ive been real firm with him when he does go in the house....ANY SUGGESTIONS???? Please HELP!! Masons cuteness is wearing out!!! :( Kristy and Mason  |
You can't expect a 12 week old puppy to be potty trained. You have to patient and consistant. You should not let him wonder the house if he is not trained. Are you using a crate? :) |
UMMM...I dont expect him to be fully potty trained by now but i do expect him to do atleast SOME of his business outside. Crate training does not work with him because he poops and pees in his crate too so thats out. |
You do need to just be patient with him. He is just a baby and sometimes it takes quite a while for them to catch on what it is you want them to do. I don't know what your time is like but I usually in the beginning fed Teddy and then about 15 to 20 minutes later brought him outdoors and we stayed out there it didn't matter how long until he did something. Then when he finally did his business we like threw yorkie potty parties. I am serious we whoo hoo'd and gave him treats and kisses and hugs and the more we did that the better he got. I know it is frustrating but it will get better... |
Potty training with my puppy seemed to get worse before it got better (besides his new trick of lifting his leg inside...). My advise to you is just to hang in there and keep doing what you are doing. Be consistant. You'll get through this, and remember he isn't doing this to make you made, and he's still your little darling! Hannah |
Well first off he's just a wee baby however he's undoubtedly confused by the fact that you expect him to potty train to two completely different methods. Pee pads and outdoors. This will never work with a puppy that young. You can train him to one or the other but not both at once. If you train him to pee pads then once he has that down you can slowly move the pads closer to the door, then out the door and then eventually get rid of them entirely. |
Unfortunately, it may take some time and patience and you'll have to keep your "eye" on him until he gets the hang of it. We got Choppi when he was 12 wks old and he was pee pad trained but still had problems going on the pad. So we had to basically retrain him all over again. Of course new house, new environment, new parents and dogs around him would prob scare him and I took that into consideration. I made sure he was never left to "wander" about and took him to the pee pad every couple of hours. I made sure he'd do his business before getting off the pad when we woke up every morning. Gave him lots of praise and even treats when he went on the pad. Eventually I weaned off the treats and just gave him lots of praise. My sister had a similar problem with her Maltese who would wait til she got inside to do her duty. It took her some time, lots of patience and lots of waiting outside for awhile til she did her duties, her Maltese slowly but surely picked up on it. It may take awhile but hang in there! :( |
Thank you all for your input. I wont get rid of him like i think some of you think is what im saying. Im just needing advice. :) I put the pads down in the spot he always goes in the house. I personally dont think im confusing him....Its either put that one pee pad down or my house smell like pee so i do it that way.He dont use the thing anyways so it really doesnt matter and isnt the issue, the issue is if we go outside for 30 minutes and i watch him closely because i give treats when he potties, hell actually wait till we step in the door and he goes. thats what im saying! |
I have a couple of questions: 1. Has he ever gone on the peepad (even once) and you praised him for it? 2. How is he doing at night time? Does he hold it all night? Where do you keep him? If he does hold it all night does he go potty outside as soon as you get up and let him out? 3. How old was he when you attempted to crate train him? How big was the crate and how big was the area in the crate that he had access to? 4. How many times a day or hourly are you taking your puppy out? If you can answer these questions, perhaps I can address each issue and see what changes you may need to make to make the housetraining more successful and less of a tedious, wearisome chore. ;) |
he pooped on the pad 1 time and i gave him a treat. Will not pee and poop no more on it. I bought the smallest one at walmart. He has room to lay and turn around but thats about it. I put him in \there and hell cry and than poo and pee everywhere..I take him out about every 30 minutes or so. and when he starts "sniffing" around itake him right out and he doesnt do anything UNTIL i bring him back in. He does hold it all night most of the time but the last two nights hes been pooping on the linoleum in the master bath. I dont know what to do. I am trying to have patience with him but it gets aggravatin after i sit outside with him for 10-30 minutes and than he comes back in a pees. ;) |
Take a deep breath and relax! I know every now and then I have to remind myself not to get uptight about the potty training thing, because that anxiety will directly communicate itself to my Millie. I am so focused on this "getting Millie housebroken" it has become the only thing that I think about and really upsets me when she has an accident. So I know you must be getting quite tense! I think that your puppy may be getting stressed out in the crate and that is why he is pooping and peeing in it. You need to try to reinforce the crate but in little increments. Try keeping the crate out and putting food in there, scattered around and have him investigate it and go inside to eat the food, leaving the door open. (you can make it treats, but make it good treats like cheese, canned chicken, hotdogs, whatever he likes.) You can also put a favorite toy in it so that he will will go and retreive it. Once he gets used to the crate and starts going in it by himself, should take a few days or more, then you can try closing the door with him in it for a 1/2 hour and making the time periods longer and longer, so that you can get a break from watching him constantly. You may never be able to keep him in there for 8 hours a night, but some time in there is always helpful for you and him, because then you can take him out of the crate and bring him outside immediately and he will HAVE to go, having held it, then he will begin to associate potty with going outside. Take away the peepad. I agree that this maybe confusing to him, because he was praised and given a treat, for going inside the house (1 time that it was). He cannot associate that it was the Peepad you were praising him for, but only for going potty and he did that inside. At night, if he is pooping or peeing at night, in the confined area, you may need to get up with him some time around 2 or 3 pm, whenever he is going, and taking him outside to do his business. (this will be temporary, but you need to avoid the number of accidents he has in the house, to get him used to going outside). If you take him out for 1/2 hour and he does not go outside, you can bring him in, but keep him on the leash! Have him follow you around until you take him out again in 10 minutes or so, to try to pee again. If he still won't do it, bring him back in and repeat, until he goes outside. When he does, you can give him some freedom but not much! Keep him confined in an area that you will be in. As long as he is on the leash, you can catch him in the act of going, so that you can stop him immediately, with a harsh NO! and take him outside and praise him when he does do it out there. I look at housebreaking as the law of averages. In order for your puppy "to get" what you are asking of him, you have to have more successes than accidents. The more successes the more that behavior sinks in. So you really have to do what it takes to make the odds work in your favor. I hope I have helped in some small way. |
I don't want to scare you but Mare is 7 months old and she is still like that. Kali was like that till she was almost 1 year old, then suddenly one day she started sitting in front of the front door when she had to go - and was housebroken :) |
Are you using treats when he goes where he is supposed to? Giving them a treat and the Yorkie Whoopee Party Dance when they do what's right works faster than anything else when it comes to training. Most dogs are food motivated. Occasionally you'll get one that's just downright stubborn no matter what you do but they are far and few between. |
