Pee question for 5-6lb dogs out there... How often does your 5-6lb dog need to pee? At 4lbs my 5mo puppy pretty easily sleeps through an 8hr night without needing to pee... we expect him to hopefully reach 5-6lbs full grown. During the day though, his bladder capacity varies wildly - sometimes he goes out every half hour, sometimes he can wait for 2-3 hours if he's napping through some of it. He's still working on potty training though, so I know we take him out more often than necessary, and will until we're pretty confident about him. I'm just wondering, after he's fully grown, about how often can we expect (hope) to take him out during the day? I know it varies, but what has your experience been? Lauren & Nikko |
My Jewels goes about 2 to 3 times |
Two to three times during the WHOLE day???!?! Wow, when I go to sleep tonight, I'll be dreaming of the day when that might happen for us. :) Thanks for the feedback. Lauren & Nikko |
Hi there! We have 2 Yorkies and their potty habits are different. Seymour will go at least 2 more times a day than Shelby. He also likes to get up once during the night. So I would say Seymour pees 4-6 times a day, and Shelby 2-4 times a day. I don't know if it matters or not, but Seymour is a boy and Shelby a girl. We waited awhile before we neutered Seymour (I think he was almost a year) and he was getting to the point that he liked to "mark" his territory, so maybe he still just has the habit....... not sure on that one! |
When my girl was 4 lbs and a little over 5 months old, I went on a 9 day trip without the hubby and puppy. Taking her to work with him, he'd put out a pad for her to go and she wouldn't go. He took her outside to walk her a bit and she didn't go. When he got home 10 hrs later, he'd place her on the pad, and she'd immediately relieve herself. That's how it went for every day when I was away. During weekends, etc, she'd go on her own on the pad and/or outside when he'd take her for outings. He's also the one she still does #1 and #2 for every morning when he wakes up for work and every evening for her last go right before we go to bed ourselves. She doesn't really go for me when I place her on the pad unless it's for her mandatory morning pee. :p She'll be a year old and just ounces shy of 6 lbs next month! Can't remember how much she used to go, but for the past two months, since we've been counting, she's been going 5 piddles daily except more recently there was a week when she went 6-7 times a day but seems to have gone back to a normal 5 piddles the past couple of days. Normal for her, at least, I think it is as I'm still trying to figure that one out. :) |
Lexilyn is 1yr old and right at 6lbs. I just now consider her potty trained. When I leave for work at 7:30am I confine her to the room where her bed is. She doesn't go potty till I or my husband get home about 3 or 4, sometimes even 5. If I don't confine her to that room, she potties whenever she wants to. Guess she figures it's not her space. After that, she comes to us 3 or 4 times before bedtime, but I think she just wants to snoop around outside. |
Layla varies too- if i took her out every hour- she'd squeeze something out.. lol.. just cause she is there :p if we are travelling all day- she probablY COULD go all day without peeing but will usually pee 2-3 times... when we are home- i'd say on average- she'll be 4-5 times- because i take her out thinking she needs to go- if I let her decide when she wants to go (assuming she'd tell me)it would probably vary from 3-7 times a day- she eats home cooked food which tends to be high in liquid so she pees more often than kibble fed dogs probably- but like you said, it varys by day! |
Well, with Bailey - it depends on the weather! :) The nicer the weather, the more often she must pee???? She holds it all night and she holds while we're at work. But when we're home-she holds it until she gets bored! |
This is interesting everybody, thanks for all the responses so far! As I suspected, there's a pretty wide variety of pee habits, but it really is nice to hear everyone's stories and ideas on why their dog pees more or less, or at different times. Lauren & Nikko |
Scooter has to go out 3 to 5 times a day. Some nights he needs to go out, other times he doesn't. For Scooter, it just depends on what we are doing. If he is running around bunch, he will drink more water and in turn need to go out more often. Don't stress yourself out too much. Only get worried if your baby doesn't go at all. |
