Jumping!!! Reese is a sweet dog. BUT, everytime there's a knock at the door or someone new around, she WON'T stop jumping up on them! Since she's a puppy she has sharp nails, almost cat-like (even after trimming!) so I'm scared she'll scratch someone or rip their pants. I try telling her "Sit" (she KNOWS this command!) but she gets wayyy to excited. I hold her when there's a knock at the door and tell her "be calm. No jumping." And as soon as I let her go, she starts jumping again. :( Any advice? |

When our doberman was jumping, the trainer told us that the best thing you can do (and get your guests to do) is to completely ignore them until they calm down. However that didn't work for our dog, I started having to be very forceful with her - getting angry and giving her a swat on the bum (no not hard - I'd never hurt my dogs) but if I didn't get her jumping under control she would take me out. It worked within a couple days once I started my "no nonsense" approch to her jumping. |
Telling a puppy to sit isn't going to stop this behavior You're going to have to do some behavioral training Get someone to volunteer to come to your door someone your pup isn't that well acquainted and someone with A LOT of patience  Have them ring the bell Tell the little jumping bean STAY...... and go to open the door If she rushes the door ..... No.... and turn away for a min Repeat until she stays for you Then open the door a tiny bit Again if she rushes to get to the person on the other side Close the door...... No...... and wait a minute until she stays for you Your volunteer might be outside for a long time make sure they have a coat and some hot cocoa it will take a long time |
