Playdate potty issues!
 

So Hiro had his first playdate over at a friends house a couple weekends ago. He absolutely loved my friend's little pug, Tink! (She's so cute!)

Anyway! I had a belly band on him, and, as I expected, he tried to pee in their house. With a firm 'NO' I took him outside and told him this is where to go pee. After that, he couldn't keep a pad dry. I think he peed more INSIDE than outside. :/ Much to my dismay. It didn't look like he was marking though cause he was squatted the whenever he peed. He even peed while I was holding him. Oi! He WAS over-stimulated the whole time - he and Tink played for hours.

Now today our friend brings Tink over to visit for the afternoon. He was ok the whole time until - without any warning as I saw it - he decided to poop (!!!!) on the floor and pee in his pad! Oi oi oi! Once again he was pretty stimulated by the company and as usual, couldn't leave little Tink alone. I am going to suspend playdates for now... but I wanted to see how everyone else may have dealt with this issue, or if they even ran into it.

I am still wondering if anyone can please guide me in the ways of getting Hiro to tell me WHEN he needs to go out! He doesn't bark, he LOVES to chew on bells.... I'm at my wits end. :(

my friend had puppy play dates at her house with three different dogs, and each time the dog will have a couple accidents at her house.

i think they are just trying to mark it. they don't do it after the first time though.

i am not sure how to get your baby to let you know that he has to go potty. milu lets me know by scuffing her feet. but i didn't teach her that, she did that on her own.

her feet scuffing is kind of universal though, she uses it for more than one thing. she will scuff after she goes potty on the pad to let me know that i owe her a treat, she will also scuff her feet to let me know that she is hungry.

when she is sitting on me, or sitting in the purse, she will whine to let me know that she needs to go potty.

i hope someone can help you with how to teach your doggie to let you know that he needs to go.

i don't know how to teach my puppy to let me know he needs to go potty either. We are still potty training him. I want to try the bells but he is afraid of them.

To newproudmom, don't worry so much about your pup being afraid of the bell(s)... we plugged away at it for weeks, despite the apparent fear of the bell. Then one day, Nikko just decided to let us know he wanted to go out all on his own by pawing at the bell. We have had almost no indoor accidents since then, and we don't really even watch him anymore - it's awesome!!!

But AvyQuinn, we have a similar problem to you as well... Our neighbor has an amazingly patient and well-adjusted cairn terrier named Klaus who is Nikko's newest best friend. When Klaus comes over here to play, Nikko is still awesome - even at the height of playtime, he rings the bell if he has to pee or poop. However, when we take him over to the neighbor's house, he'll just go over about a few feet from his front door, and poop or pee like it's totally cool. Our neighbor's house's layout is literally an exact mirror image of our own house (and fairly small too btw), and we always bring Nikko's bell over and hang it right by the door just like it is in our house. And when we're over there and think Nikko might have to pee, we ring the bell before we take him out, just like at home. But he just doesn't understand! :-(

Our neighbor is totally patient and understanding, so long as we clean up the mess, so that's really great. But I don't want to clean up messes anymore, lol! And I do like going over to his place - it makes our doggies happy, and we get to watch his cable TV. We don't have a ton of money, so we chose getting our wonderful Nikko over having cable TV this year :-)

Oh CRAP!!!!! Of course as soon as I posted that about almost no accidents, Nikko goes and pees next to our couch. And this is literally just minutes after his last pee outside. I sure hope he's not marking... he squatted, didn't lift his leg, but it was right after an outside pee, and there sure wasn't much pee in the accident. Oh sheesh, I should've just kept my big mouth shut. :sad:

LOL I've done that before too! 'Oh, he's so good, I think he's got the hang of it... blah blah blah...' and then he piddles right there pretty much in front of you when you're bragging about him. Yeah.

Yeah, I hope someone can suggest some ways of showing him how to tell me that he needs to go out. My mom suggested that now that he has control of his bladder from the crate training that I leave him in the kitchen (since the door where we go out is in the kitchen) and see what he does. Hopefully he will make some noise later on today when he has to go outside! She said that's how she trained one of the dogs I grew up with... she musta forget some details somewhere though, seems to easy! lol

I was thinking of getting one of those hotel bells - you know, the ones that you press down on from the top to make a DING noise. I could double side tape it down to the floor by the door and DING it every time we go out. He can step on it to ding it. Works like the bells except he can't chew and subsequently destroy them like his last set... ?

When Milo was a puppy I had him on a schedule where I would take him out every couple of hours. In the house he had no collar or harness on and I would put it on him at the front door before we went out. After a little time he just started going to the front door and pawing at it to let me know he has to go out. They are very smart animals if you watch your puppy very carefully you should notice a change in behavior before they pee or poop in the house

Your idea sounds exactly like a smart cheaper version of the tell bell (Tell Bell - Kelston Products). And if your pup starts chewing on it or something, you can always give it a squirt of bitter apple spray i suppose? I dunno - check out that site, I think they have some good directions on there.
