Why are yorkie known as hardest to potty train? I am curious I took my dog to the vet for his last shot and the guy is like yorkie terriers are known and the hardest to housebreak? I wonder why and how long does usually other dogs learn? I've heard they learn pretty quick to housebreak much faster then yorkies |
I haven't heard that myself, that Yorkies are the hardest to potty train. Belly bands, taking them out frequently, and treats all do wonders on helping them potty train. :) |
Yorkies aren't any harder to potty train than Chihuahuas or Pomerainians (sp?). You just have to understand that they have tiny bladders and just like children can't hold it very long in the beginning and they'll never be able to hold as long as a larger dog. Take them out for a potty break as often as you can (fenced in area or on lease) and in between make sure they know where the wee-wee pads are. If they don't know what to do with the pads, wet a tiny place on them with their urine or throw a poop on it. That usually does the trick. Best of Luck! |

This is my opinion, I think it has to do with many factors, :) 1. How old is the yorkie when you get it(if the dog is older may be harder to train). 2. How diligent are you and what are your expectations 3. You need patience 4. The urine is less obvious then a big dogs. There are many many more reasons and they do have a smaller bladders. I am doing my best 10 weeks into (outside) potty training. Rain, hot sun and eventually the cold cold winter |

I had read that yorkies were hard to housebreak on petfinder.com. I've personally never had a problem and I have housebroke 2 so far and will be doing a 3rd her in a few weeks. I know each one is different and as with any dogs it just takes patience and understanding just like when you potty train a child. |
It took me 2 years to potty train my lab. It took me 6 months to potty train Eddie. I think your vet is taking doggie downers. :) |
Actually, I've heard this too, but mine were not any harder than any other small dog. Sometimes I think they are so smart, they will get our attention, even in a bad way. |
I heard this too. Starsky was about the same as with any other dog. He learned pretty quick I think. I was expecting it to go a lot longer. I wish though that he could be both outdoor trained and pee pad trained so we can take him traveling. I am even thinking of not crating him now when I am at work. We are probably going to get a new door with a doggie door in it. Now I will have to train him to go through the door! I am hoping he'll learn quick, so far he has learned tricks pretty fast. He is so smart!!! :good job: |
I Don't think Yorkies are the hardest to potty train. IMO i think it depends on how much time you are willing to put forward into potty training your dog, whether it be a Yorkie or not. I got my first Yorkie/Pomeranian at 8 Weeks old and he was doing great with his potty training the first week of training. My 2nd Yorkie I got it took her only 3 weeks to potty train, and my third (maltese) it took her a while only because it was ME who couldn't stick to our potty training schedule. They are all potty trained right now with few boo-boo's but it's expected (well from me at least, because i make mistakes too! lol  ) this is just my experience. |
I dont think chloe was any harder than my other dogs to housebreak. We are still working on it. Maybe some people just think its harder because they dont realize how small there bladders are. CHloe has to go out more often than my boxer who can hold it for hours upon hours. |
Gracie learned the concept very quickly...(she would go to the door and pee at the door, hadn't quite figured out the holding it part :) ) But by the time she was 12-14 weeks she was going to the door only having the occasional accident....and at 20 weeks she was COMPLETELY potty trained...she whines at the door if I am not paying attention...I had heard they were hard to potty train and was worried but Gracie caught on VERY quickly...Good luck with your little guy :) |
