training advise - aggression I am having issues with one of my yorkies girls, Bella. She is aggressive towards the other dogs in the household and i'm concerned someone will get injured.. it doesn't seem to be getting better but may even be getting worse. She was living with someone else for a little over a month, as difficult as it was to give her up it was someone who I knew would be a great home and unfortunately she had the same issue with aggression there. She is back here at home now and I just am not sure how to deal with this type of issue. I would love to be able to change this behaviour but is it possible and what steps do I take. I would love to keep her in my family. My other dogs are ALL bigger then her, 3 of them are labs 1 a boston terrier and I don't worry so much about her hurting them, as them retailiating when she goes after her and hurting or killing her... they are not aggressive at all but they are dogs kwim. My other yorkie is afraid of her but they spend time together in their expen... ugh this has become so difficult. any advice? |
I'm not an expert by any means, but have you taken her to dog training classes? I'm not sure how old she is or how long you have had her, but I know learning basic dog obedience and adopting the "nothing for free" technique can often help. You can do a search on here and online regarding aggression and I'm sure you will find alot of good advice and some books that will help as well! Good luck! |
Have you tried anything yet? I really think Cesar has some great methods for dealing with aggression, and I think his advice is even more important when you have more than one dog. I'm sure you've heard the words pack leader and use calm assertive behavior around the dogs, but with the Cesar method, it's best to immerse yourself into his program or book until a little light bulb goes off, and you "get it." You can rent a whole series of shows from Netflex, and he has a weekly program on the National Geographic channel, he also has a web site and books available. We also have a member Scootybooty who offers specialized training to Yorkietalk members at a discount. LDThome |
I have 2 yorkie sisters and one is very aggressive to the other .. The attacks when they happen are vicious and scary.. they arent as frequent , but theres still lots of tension .. to the point some days i have to muzzle her.. I havent found anything thats helping yet.. I have call a dog trainer who has expericene with aggression, im hoping this will help ..other wise ones going to have to go and id hate to do that. know your not alone ... Ive been battling this for a year now ...... |
I don't know if this will help in your case, but I watched " It's Me or The Dog" and she dealt with a dog who would not leave the cat alone by working on the "Leave it" command. She taught the command first the way it is usually instructed with treats - Having the dog leave the food or object and then rewarding with food and praise. When the dog had perfected the command, she continued by putting the cat (and Owner) on the bed in the same room, and when the dog approached, she said " Leave it " and rewarded with the treat and praise. It worked! Eventually the cat and dog could stay in the room with just the command. I hope this works for you. Good Luck! |
I have watched her shows and I do like her approach .. Thats a really good idea... I wouldnt have thought of that.. thank you !! We just are getting the sit stay down .. so i think Leave it will definatly be next!!! thanks for the suggestion |
I think getting a behavioral trainer would be better then puppy classes. |
I am actually setting up an apointment with a dog trainer who has experience with aggression .. I have my fingers crossed.. she works with positive reinforcment like the treats and all ... starting in Febuary ! I hope it works |
