Hello..
I just got my 3 months old mini yorkie, i have her since a week.
I am unable to control her potty. I am thinking about the crate training but how does it work?
Do i crate her at night or only during the day?
Because at night when we are a sleep and i keep her in her bed to sleep i wake up and fine her did potty all over the place. How can i control this?
I live in an apartment so i cant outdoor train her.

I am currently using the pads, after feeding her in 20 minutes i take her to the pads but she wouldnt do potty. She stays for maybe an hour or more without doig anything. When ever i see her sniffeing or going on circles i take her immediatly to the pads but she wouldnt do anything.

Seriously what can i do?
What is the crate process?
Is it a place where i only put the pads or what?

I have done both crate and potty pads. I feel the crate training is effective. Honestly I have had a battle with the pads only because he goes sometimes on it or miss it. He uses it when he wants too and then he will potty anywhere he wants. I crate mine when I leave or if I can't watch them just to make sure there isn't a mess I don't see.

So what can I do?
What is the best method to train her?

There's no "best" way...because everyone has different needs, humans and dogs. It's kind of a trial and error which method works best for you. Have a good read on this site - I think they cover both potty pads and crate training:

Does anyone have trained dogs that are not created? I just bought the book. Potty training has been a two year battle, I work from home and can take them out every 20 minutes and they will come in and pee. It to the point o use diapers. But now my dramatic dog gets his wig butt going on and take them off or will do this leg thing where he walks sideways (cause he knows it scares me to take them off)

I have two 1yr old brothers took me 8 months to potty train fully..and I also have a 8 month old puppy who is a stinker. Will use the pads inside,but also has accidents too not on the pads. He will also go outside when we go out.

My Parrot hears me asking the dogs if they have to go . Now he ask them.
He Says ,You have to go Potty? Go outside, then he says good boy good girl.
Not that this will help but its funny. I need to try and film it so people will believe me.

wondering if anyone has experienced their yorkie pooping in food dish. I just noticed that he pooped in his dry food dish . I am thinking behavior he is 8 months old. A lot of work but he does listen and potty training going well considering. Thanks your help and input is always appreciated. Have a good day.

Get a remote controlled doggie door and let the parrot let them out into a little yard and you'll have a great invention.

Will this work like a crate for potty training ? She's using her pads religiously but not sure if it's gonna work when she's out and about … there's a door to go in and out …

My grand daughter, her husband and new son live with us. Our 2 year old yorkie goes in their room and pees on their new mattress. I will have to get rid. Of him if i can not stop this. I love my yorkie but i cant have him peeing all over.

Yes, it will work. I have this same setup for my now 1 yr old Gidget. At first, I took her to the bathroom first thing in the morning and then several times a day. She soon started coming to me and letting me know she needed to pee and I would take her to the little bathroom. It took a couple of weeks but now she goes in when she needs to go even if I'm not in the room with her. She still stays in the puppy apartment when I need to leave the house. She will do her poopy in the morning when I put her in upon waking but she still hasn't gotten the hang of going in on her own to poopy. But at least it's easier to clean up than the pee. She'll get the hang of it one day. In the meantime, I'm just being patient with her.

Have you considered closing the door and preventing him from going into their bedroom instead?

My dog refuses to use potty pads

My dog is not a puppy. I got her from a breeder when she was 2 years old.
We have her for about 3months now, she is very good but the only problem I have is she poo and pee everywhere.
I know where she was she had a potty pad and bought some, but she only use it sometimes.
When I wake up in the morning she has poo'd on the tile floor. It is also not just one place but several places. sometimes up to 5 dfr places.
She will also randomly pee on my carpet. When moan at her it looks like she knows exactly why she is getting scold at.
What can I do?
Please I am desperate.

I believe that no matter what the dog's age, they can be re-potty trained. In fact, the potty training methods are usually needed if they ever re-locate to a different place.

Best bet is to limit her access to your home. Set a potty schedule and place her in the restricted area whenever it's potty time. There are different potty training techniques that have been tried and true. Take a look at The Housebreaking Bible for now and see what works for you.

But definitely you can help her adjust by not giving her access to your entire home, restrict her from carpeted areas, and only let her run around freely after you know she went potty.

They learn best when you celebrate /reward them for doing things right (not when scolded after doing something wrong). Set her up for success and prevent all accidents whenever possible!

My 11 month old male yorkie is started peeing on my bed. i'm changing my sheets every day and its getting old. he sleeps with us and has never done this before, but has done it for the last 10 days straight. sometimes before we wake up, and sometimes if iforget to shut the bedroom door.

I would personally not find this acceptable and would either start crate training him or put him in a xpen at night with a potty pad asap. If it's your preference to eventually sleep with your Yorkie, then I would wait until he's been completely potty trained (without accidents) before allowing him to have access to your bed.

Hi Ladies,
I'm a new mom to a precious little girl, Moxie! She goes to work with me and is not doing too badly with the training except for when we go home. If I have plans I make sure she goes out, play with her, try to tire her out. I then crate her, but, everytime I come home she has pooped in her crate. Ugh it's such a mess! I am so flustered and discouraged! Help!!

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum. I will try this information about potty training because nothing else has worked,however, consistency is the key. Wish me and Toasty luck!

When I first got Ella (at 12 weeks), she was peeing well on the pads but would not poop on the pad. I had to place two pee pads on the floor, one she peed on and she learned to poop on the other one. I treated her a lot when she pooped on the pad. After a month, she pooped consistently on the pad, but once in a while would pee on my rugs. That first month was hell BTW. It was tiring to watch her all the time. She's my first dog.

Peeing outside:
When she was about 4.5 months, I started training her to potty outside. But she would just hold it in until she got back inside. Once in a while she would pee outside, not on the grass, just the pavement. That was progress!!! Then one day she was squatting outside and squealed, like it hurt to pee. She tried to pee again inside on a pee pad and squealed again. After that she was scared of her pee pad, held her pee for a long time and would pee on my rugs. Went to the vet and she had what appeared to be UTI or maybe bladder infection (even though the tests were negative). She squealed a little when the vet poked her bladder area. I had to get a pee sample to confirm, so made her drink a lot of water. Maybe she drank too much water afterwards and she peed A LOT when we were outside. I think she just had to get comfortable with peeing outside and that helped a lot. Both on the pavement and the lawn. After that, she peed less and less inside when I'm home since I just take her out regularly (every couple of hours maybe?). And she pees on the pad in her pen when I'm at work.

Pooping outside
I started with weekday morning trainings with her. I knew she wakes up at 435ish in the morning so I would get up at 415 so I can catch potty time before she does it on the pad. When she pooped, I gave her lots of treats and got really excited. But I know consistency is key, so i took advantage of one long weekend. We did the morning thing, and after each meal, when she was sniffing around the house, I thought it was time for her to poop. So we would go to the backyard, no toys, just me standing there waiting for something to happen. She did poop eventually and I gave her lots of treats for pooping. After being consistent with that during the weekend, she has only pooped inside once (but that was my fault -- gave her too much carrots, oops).

Now at 6 months
I taught her how to use the bell by the door. She rings it when she 'wants' to go outside, whether to play or potty. She only pees on the pad when i get lazy. I keep her on a regular feeding schedule so she poops on schedule (not when I'm at work) -- I slipped one time and gave her green peas and carrots for breakfast and she pooped 6 times that day with just 2 meals. That won't happen again.

Peeing and pooing on command
Try to teach to pee and poo on command. It only works for Ella when she has something in her bladder, or has to poop. Theres a lot of youtube videos on how to do this. My Ella responds to "go pee" and "go poopoo". Had to teach her to pee on command because I had to take her with me on a road trip, and poop on command because she tends to eat her poop if she poops while I'm at work.

I rescued a 2 yo newly neutered male from the local humane society. Is is very very smart, affectionate, and good in every other way, except the potty issue. I immediately went to crate training mode to rehabilitate him. I feed him on schedule, take him out on a schedule, but he is very opportunistic. Sometimes he'll sit in his outside enclosure (I affectionately call the poopie outhouse) and stare at me for 15-30 minutes. Things were going pretty well until he started peeing in his crate on his cushy bed, and then one time after a stareoff/standoff outside where I made the mistake of assuming he didn't have to poop, and he pooped on a rug within 2 seconds after starting his evening meal when I ran downstairs to start the dryer. At night or when I leave, I remove his cushy bed and leave him in his bare crate (he won't pee unless there's a towel or cushion). I don't allow him out of my sight and crate him if I have to go do some household chores. Now that it's getting colder, he is pretty quick to pee outside on command, and sometimes is quicker to poop, especially if i go inside and leave him in the enclosure. If he refuses to poop outside, I crate him as soon as we come in (because I know good and well he has to poop.). I feed him twice a day and expect him to poop at least twice a day. I kind of dread the coming winter, and have purchased some coats for him to wear outside. He KNOWS pooping inside is wrong. He's also wiggly when brushing so I started doing the control down exercises because I believe part of the problem with ignoring my potty commands is that he doesn't yet recognize me as the pack leader, but a plaything. I will NOT use pee pads because I firmly believe that only teaches going pee/poo inside is ok. I'll get a dogsitter or board him before using a potty pad. I believe I'm taking the right approach but am kind of bummed about having to crate him so much. I believe it's going to take several months of giving him zero free access in the house out of my sight and dominance training. I am so glad I took an early retirement because this would seem impossible if I was working outside the home.
