I've created a monster! I have created a monster...I mean, from the very beginning, we have played with the lil one by waving our hand underneath a blanket or afghan and then letting them find it and bite on it. Can you see where this is going?? How do I stop this? |
10 month old potty's in crate I got a puppy from a women who got him from a pet store. We will not sto using the bathroom in the house and in his crate. Please help if not I have to find him a new home. |

1) Is the crate too big? He/she should only have enough room to turn around and lie down...only enough room for his/her body to fit. We had to get a divider and could not leave ANYTHING in there (even a towel or blanket would get peed on and buried). 2) Read this thread and others about potty training..it will help. You can find out how to use a schedule. etc. My Max is completely potty trained at 6 months. 3) If you are ready to give up on your puppy already, do you think that you are ready for the responsibility of taking care of him or her for a long time (Yorkies-15-16 yr. life expectancy) ? Good luck sweety! |
Hey again, I wanted to add that Max did really well when we gave him treat for going potty in the yard and we took him to the same place every time. Over time, we have been able to fade the reinforcement and he no longer needs a treat. Good luck! |
My dog is going on 2 and shes potty trained although she will have accidents from time to time |
puppy mill rescue hello - we adopted a 6yr old female rescued from a mill. We are working with her on several issues, but not sure about the house training. From everything I've read we are doing the right things, but she isn't following the rules. :D It seems she has no issues about eliminating in her kennel. I've bought the smallest kennel I can find, but she will still occasionally pee while inside, even if she were just outside previously and only in the kennel a short time. She is really sweet and gentle, but we are worried that this isn't correctable. She doesn't seem to connect the "good" outside with praise and treats for going and the whole not peeing where you sleep thing. It is hard to praise her since she is so shy - any quick movements scare her and she doesn't really enjoy affection. Giving her treats seems to work as she is expecting them now after she goes outside....just not enough to hold it while in the kennel. Any advice for a rescued yorkie? |
Potty Training Question I have just downloaded the How to housebreak your dog in 7 days on my Kindle and looking forward to reading it. I kept two of my puppies from my litter so have got to get them trained. I was reading all the good pointers and email from all of you but didn't see my biggest problem addressed (maybe further down than I read ;)) .... anyone have training advise for me when I work all day? Does the book address this? :aimeeyork |

Hahaha I purchased the book only hours before this thread. It's great! |
This schedule worked out great for me. True to form, I stuck with it for 7 days to a tee and she was trained by the end of it. Thanks everyone!! |

I have seen some videos about clicker training, but I'm still confused as to how this actually works.... what is the exact mechanism behind this? Is the clicking sound rewarding to doggies?? :animal-pa |
Help. I ve been using Housebreaking in7Days with moderate success but it has only been 2 days. Brutus will pee outdoors but will not poop outdoors. When he poops indoors it is one of three spots that are it of the way, away from the central activity. Our thought is that he does not want others to see him poop. We are using a crate. I have had dogs since childhood and never had a dog poop secretly. Thanks for any input. |

Ok, I read all (more or less :P) the potty training thread here, and I know you are supposed to say No when you see him trying to go where you don't want them to, then pick him up and put him on the pad to do it there. And then praise him a lot if he does it there. And repeat until he figures it out what you want. The problem I have is that I can't seem to figure out when he wants to go. Especially with the pee. He has the same face and body posture when he just sits or when he pees. He is walking, stops for 2 seconds and when he moves again the little puddle is there. I tried putting a little of the pee on a pad, I tried spraying a pad with that spray that theoretically tells them "here are you supposed to go", I tried putting him on a pad several times after he wakes up... He is with us only for a day, but he is a smart dog and I am sure he would understand what i want, I just have to figure out how to communicate it to him at the right moment, which I seem to fail on doing... |
Is one year too late to potty train? oops, had no idea what I was doing so didn't crate Bitsy as puppy as long as this site indicates so she goes outside when I take her but hides and goes in the house if I don't catch her. She will crate without fussing as long as she can see me - is it too late to get her completely trained for outside? |
