Pees on pads, but wont go there when out of xpen.
 
My baby goes pretty good on pee pads which are in her xpen, but if she is out playing or just free in the house, she won't go to the pads to pee. she pees wherever in the house. I have been just taking her up to the pads when I can tell she might have to go, but she still doesn't go to the pads herself. she is 5months. Is this common? will I forever have t otake her to her xpen to go, or will she eventually go there on her own?

hmm, she should catch on. How long do you let her out. I would only let her out to play after your baby has been outside to relieve themselves. Then let them play fully supervised. If you notice they are going to go potty take them immediatly to the pad or outside. My boy never went to the pad I only used them in the pen. If I noticed they had to potty then I just took them outside immediatly.
Sometimes with these guys it takes alot of work.

When you say you've been taking her up to the pads, do you mean you are picking her up and carrying her to the pads? At her age I would limit her freedom - maybe keep her gated in the same room as the xpen till you see her going to the pads on her own. Then you can expand her area of freedom to another room but as soon as she starts squatting shoo her into the room with her pads. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing it 'click' in their heads - they'll be playing and all of a sudden you see them run to the next room where their pad is, go potty, and then come back to play;)

Does your dog go to the pee pads on her own when she is out of her xpen?

Yes, I am picking her up and taking her there when I think or see she has to go. I put her on the pads & say "go potty." I usually have her gated in the kitchen when I play w/her and if I see she has to go, that's when I pick her up & take her to the xpen w/pads in it. The xpen is not in the kitchen, it is in my bedroom, so I don't usually gate her in there, because of the carpet. There isn't room in the kitchen for the xpen. I also have her on a schedule so that she should pee on the pads & not when she is out of her crate or xpen. Anyhow...Your idea sounds good, I just don't want her to pee on the carpet if I can't shoo her into the xpen quick enough. Possibly it would work though if I can actually get her to go in there without picking her up & putting her on the pads. Thanks for the input!
