Help! Hello Everyone, We just rescued a 6 yo yorkie from a puppymill about 3 weeks ago. Shes potty trained to go on pee pads and shes doing really well. But when we leave the house and crate her, she will pee and poo in her crate every time. So I tried not crating her and she keeps peeing in her bed. Maybe its because shes lived in a crate her whole life so shes used to peeing and poo in the crate??? But when I started pee pad training her, it only took her one day and she was using the pee pad. But when shes inside the crate she will still pee and poo in there too. Maybe its a form of separation anxiety??? I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this??? I thought dogs naturally dont pee and poo in a crate or their bed???? Ive been taking her with me everywhere I go but I will be starting a new job and I cannot take her with me. Oh and the weird thing is if shes in her crate in the car and I leave her in the car to go the market, she doesnt pee. Only if shes in the crate at home. Ive tried putting a diaper on her and it was even a bigger mess when I got home. Any suggestions would help..... thanks! Love, Jenn, Buddee, Kaylee, & Chloe |
Not an expert here.... Just a thought. Could you trying gating her in a small area like your kitchen, where she would have a separate area to sleep and have her potty pads nearby? It worked for Piccolo, when we were out of the house. |
Bet the PM left her in a crate for long period of times, so she had no choice but to go in her crate. I suggest a regular schedule of feeding & potty walks after feeding, & walks at other times to train her to relieve herself outside the crate. |
Restrict area Get some kiddy gates and restict to a small room, leave pee pads in a corner and leave the crate open for security/ |
I think everybody is right rather than crateing her try gateing her in a small room with speciaic areas designated for sleeping and peeing and pooping She has lost the ability to decipher not to go in a crate because she's been forced to eliminate in one for so long allowing her to eliminate where she Doesn't sleep might help |
Thanks everyone!! I will try that |
Yay!!!!!!!!!!! Guess what? today was the first time Chloe did not pee or poo in her crate. I took her out for a long walk before I left. Thanks everyone!!!!! |

The first 6 mos of her life were in a crate or small cage, she would have had no other choice that to have used the bathroom in there. I would get an xpen set up for her, that way she has room to walk around and can have toys in there, her bed, water, food and pee pad |
I agree with keeping her gated off in a particular part of your house, say the kitchen. Put her crate with her plankets in the room you choose, but don't put her in the crate. Just leave it open in case she wants to lay inside for security. Put the wee wee pads away from her cratein the gated off room, and keep her on a regulated eating schedule. Thanks for being so nice, and taking her in. |
