Pad vs. outdoor and transition ? Hi. I have put a deposit on a precious little girl--and now our work situation has changed. I am going to be working a couple of days a week whereas before I was staying at home. I had intended to crate train and outdoor train since I would be home and have the time. Now I am wondering if it would be better for the puppy to pad train so she can be put in a small room while we are all out (I don't think it would be 'fair' to crate her so young for so long.) What has been your experience and advice? Also, how hard is it to switch from pads to outdoor if you begin with one but then want her to just use the outside once older? Any and all advice will be appreciated! Thanks! Tonya:):aimeeyork |
My wife and I just got our Yorkie today and we were curious about this same question. I bought her pads and intended to train her on those first and when she was a little older get her trained for outside as well. |
yeah my boyfriend and i have had benny for about a month and as of now he is pretty well trained on his pee pads. our plan was to do that first and then transition him to outdoors so he will have both options. hopefully making the transition to outdoors will be easy as he hasnt gone outside at all yet in the few times weve taken him out. anyone done this? whats the best way to teach them to go outside from going on pee pads? |
Back in November, I had Daisy Mae for a 3 weeks, and she was trained on pee pads. We took a 7 hours car trip and stopped at rest stops for her to take care of buisness and she did fine between pads and going outside. Try both, I am sure your pup will do fine either way. ~Kathy:animal-pa |
BIL suggests NOT to start on pads... I spoke with him about this as he has had Yorkies for 20 years now. He says he tried the pads first then outside with his new one (she's about 3)and it was a big mistake, that she never has fully quit going in the houseif she decides it taking someone too long to let her out or too cold, etc. I am hoping to get other input as I am wondering if this is true of the breed or just this particular pooch. I have a lab for 12 years that died before Christmas (we are still grieving her in many ways) and had used this method with her without ANY difficulty. I hope others will post their experiences soon......as we get her NEXT weekend. Thanks! Blessings.:animal-pa |
It's possible to do both. When I got Bea I pad trained her as I got her in the fall and I also take her to work with me so it was the best way to go. This spring she housetrained herself at home. She would wait to go outside when we were at home but at work still used the pads. When winter came again she has gone back to using the pad at home, she hates the cold weather and sulks if I put any kind of coat or anything on her. Can't wait for spring! |
If you are going to be away for long, pads are the only way to go. I took Joey outside first thing in the morning, and last thing at night. During the night he was placed on a pad in the bathroom one or two times, when he cried to be left out of the crate. We take him for walks, and I think he might even prefer going outside, but the pads are his staple, and I don't have to worry about him ever having to hold it too long. Pads are a great connivance. We switched to washable, and love these even more. |
Thanks for the feedback. We are to get her on Friday so this has been very helpful.:) |
I kept Zada in a ex-pen attached to the front of her wire crate, and put a pee-pad at the opposite end. I put a blanket over the crate and bedding inside the crate. I took her outside every hour for potty and play, but if she needed to go potty during the time in the ex-pen, she went on the pad. I didn't have to "pad-train" because she knew to go on it anyway. If they piddle on the floor instead of the pad, just take a tissue and dab a bit of the pee then blot it on the pad. I still use pads at night, for traveling, motels and raining days. They all use the pad if they can't get out. It's such a blessing. I'm not sure how that works for boy pups if they lift their legs though. ;) |
