Help! Who needs the training? Me or Max? Wow! I've been reading all the great results y'all are getting with your pets (training). Max and I have attended two puppy obedience classes and I'm slightly frustrated. I know Max can sit, shake, lay in the down position, spin, etc., but in the obedience class there is a very specific way things are to be done. For instance, before Max can sit, he has to walk from my right side to my left, then make a circle near my ankles and THEN sit. Bless his heart, he would sit anytime I asked him, but it is not "executed" like they want. He will sit immediately when asked, but it might be in front of me, beside me, but the only way he really does the full circle sit is when lead with a treat. I have no plans on entering him in any shows, simply want what is best for all of us, which means obedience. How hung up should I get on the execution? Help! Max's mom - wired |
If you are not planning to show him in obedience, don't get hung up on it. Use treats and lot of treats! Repeat your commands as many time as you need to. Have fun with it! Think of it as teaching your dog a new trick. Treat it as a game. Don't get frustrated with it. |
Maybe it would help to rename the sit by your side command so it is not confused with the regular sit you already taught him. I would talk to the trainer about the problem. It could be the "heelsit" or some such since it the poition he would take for beginning to heel. |
Max sounds like he is doing wonderful so far with all the commands you have taught him. I really wouldn't worry too much about the "executed" way unless you plan on using it often. Enjoy the training, it should be a fun time bonding with Max. He will sense your frustration and possibly get frustrated himself.?. |
Thanks for the training support! Thank you SO much for the supportive responses. I'm going to do just that - chill. I don't have any plans for shows, only plans for fun. I agree with SoCalyorkiLvr I would rename the command where he has to walk around to "heel" and keep the sit command they way it is (where he sits anywhere). |

Hello, and welcome to YT! Don't worry about Max. My suggestion would be to reposition him with your hand when he sits in the wrong spot--then praise him!! He'll eventually get it. And since you're not showing, it's not a big deal. Do you have pictures of Max? :) |
I taught Chloe to do the basic commands in one short afternoon. I could train until doomsday but little Lacey will do as she pleases. Fortunately, she's the one I can scoop up and carry with me. I used to say Chloe is my smart dog and Lacey is just cute but now when I tell them it is night night time, she gets up and marches right into her kennel and I have to climb under the bed and get Chloe, who considers sleep a nuisance, so go figure, they're all different. |
Welcome to YT. I'm sure you are going to get real good advice from someone here. There are some really good trainers on board. I'm sorry to say that my Sabrina is 10 years old, she thinks come means run, sit means run, here means stand 4 feet away and wag your tail. If/when i get another of these little darlins, I fully intend to work on training - have already bought books, but I can't catch Sabrina to get a leash on her yet. Best of luck. |
