NEW mommy confused on how to pottytrain! 1 Attachment(s) :animal-pa Hi Everyone! I have a question about potty training. Pilot is 4 months old, he is our first lil guy, and he is typically alone 2 days a week for about 8 hours, the other days he is either alone for around 4 hours or we are home with him. First off, at night, he is crate trained. The other days that he is alone, we keep him in a 8x10 sun room with hardwood floors. We are currently using puppy pads, he poops about 75% of the pad but only pees about 50% of the time on the pad. My question is which should I use that is more efficient? Paper, Litter box, or UGODOG?!? I desperately need advice! Thanks for all your help! -amy ~ Pilot's mommy! :animal-pa |
Welcome to YT!!! I assume your asking about what to do when the puppy is alone - right? 8x10 is kinda big? I kept Bailey in a 4x4 expen when she was that young - and alone while I was at work. Most dogs won't soil where they live - and I have found that to be true. Bailey never soiled her crate. However, she did soil her ex-pen, and she chewed her pee pads until she was about 8 mos old. I accepted the fact that I would just clean her pen every day - and it took all of 5 minutes so it was no big deal. Around 8-9 mos - she started to hold it all day and lost interest in the pee pads. I never tried liter- but I'm told that most dogs will try to eat it.... My suggestion is to keep your baby in something smaller than 8 x 10 - also, I would purchase a small piece of vinyl flooring to protect the floors. I bought a 10x10 piece at Home Depot for $10 - well worth the $$. Good luck!! |
welcome to YT!! What a cutie you have & I love the name Pilot. I think consistency is the biggest thing. How much have you read about crate training? Here is some good reading: American Dog Trainers Network -- How To Successfully Crate Train Your Puppy All About Dogs!...Crate Training Your Puppy or Adult Dog How to Crate Train your dog or puppy Perhaps for the days he is along longer you could use an x-pen, thereby giving Pilot room to move around, and room for the pee pad, but less opportunity tp miss the pad |
