Training a pup to know outdoor boundaries Hi ya'll! I live in a rural area of North Alabama. We have a fenced in back yard with a pool, so there's not alot of play area there for the puppies. We have 5 acres and I let them play outside several times a day, but I want to teach them where the play boundaries area. THere are tall weeds in my neighbors garden that I don't want them in. There are acres of woods behind my house that lead to the river and the wildlife refuge. I certainly don't want them in there! How do I teach them which area of the yard is playyard,i.e., where the boundaries lie? I am with them every second they are outside. I just get tired of chasing them when they go too far. |
To teach them where the boundaries are, you have to have a very solid recall. If you can't call your dog back, then it is hard to teach them boundires. In my front yard, the road in front of my house is the boundry. I have taught my dogs they can run all over my front yard and my neighbors front yard but can't cross the street. If they head that direction, I call them back. They just learn after many repetition. |
Thanks for your response. My puppies have not learned to come when called 100% of the time yet. It's not their fault - I've neglected to fully train them in that area. Guess I know what we'll be working on this weekend :) Thanks again! |
like yorkieagility said, they have to be really really good at coming when called. after they have that really good, you can start teaching them where they can go. the thing that worked for me is you put a leash on your dog and walk them around the peremiter of where you want them. you walk a little bit each day, and don't let them go any further unless you are with them. i hope that helps. good luck!! |
