How do I stop roxy from being spiteful? :eek:Little Roxy has developed a habit of potting wherever she is standing when she doesnt get her way. She has been doing this ever since we brought her home, is it just part of her personality or am I just doing something wrong? |
Well I don't believe that dogs are spiteful, it kind of implies that is she is plotting to get even with you. Dogs live in the moment and they may do what we consider naughty things, but I don't believe it's to get "even." You used the word potting, and did you mean pouting, I do believe it's possible for a dog to pout, this just means that they want something, food, exercise, or maybe playtime and attention. Joey pouts for more food occasionally, and it's the cutest little face I've ever seen and very hard to resist. When studying dogs facial expressions, scientists have learned that those dogs who looked humans in the eyes and used "cute" expressions, were the most likely to survive, so these traits are passed from one generation to the next. This doesn't mean you are doing anything wrong, and maybe you will learn why she's pouting, but you can't always do something about it. |
well I feel like she is purposely being naughty because she gets into the position and waits until we see her and then pees or poop wherever she is standing, when we dont pay attention to her when she wants attention or let her roam the house freely. She also chooses when she wants to listen and maybe its just her personality, but i think that I might be training her the wrong way, or im just not understanding her language. Im just not sure when she should be in trouble and when she makes an honest doggy mistake. As of right now Im trying the positive training where I only focus on what she does right, hopefully that is the right way . |

Yes, do the positive training, they can sense when you are even a little upset, so you don't have to yell to let them know they made a mistake. All her mistakes are honest doggy mistakes. Remember, if they make a mistake it' really a training mistake, but don't be too hard on yourself either. Joey would seem to wait for me not to look and then go. Whenever they are out of the xpen, you have to carefully supervise them, and have a pee pad handy. Remember, she doesn't understand your words, it's not that she's not choosing to listen. |
lol ... it sounds to me like you've might have made your bed ...... Dogs respond to stimuli .. and unwittingly you might have set up a situation where your scolding her makes her poop or pee Mom is making noise so this is where she wants me to go Dogs can't plot or be spiteful They actually do want to please you But they don't know our language and we need to show them what we want through example and praise contain her as much as possible so there is less LIKELY to be an accident And praise her as much as you can when she gets it right a t |
One of my friends had a dog that went through something like that. When she wanted attention, peeing was her ultimate power move. I believe that dogs love us, but they don't take our emotions in account when they act (just like men! :P). So a dog doesn't think "I shouldn't pee on the floor because mommy just got a new rug and she will be sad." The dog thinks "I won't pee on the floor because if I go outside, I'll get a treat." Or alternatively, "I want attention. Peeing gets me attention." Anyway, my friend's dog did grow out of it. I would stick with positive reinforcement (I think it's fine to clap your hands, yell no, etc if you catch her in the act). In the meantime, can you give her more attention at other times so she doesn't feel the need to lay down the hammer, as it were? Also, remember, negative attention is sometimes better than no attention at all, so don't reward her in any way if she pees indoors. Correct, clean up the mess, and ignore her. |
