Hannah bites.......hard I have a 13 week old yorkie who loves to bite. She does not nibble. When she bites she clamps down and won't let go. If I move the "target" she goes for another part of my body. Let's say she bites my hand. I move it, she then goes for my elbow. I move that she goes for my wrist and so on. I tried the following training techniques: the buzzer sound, saying ouch, a water bottle, distracting her with a toy, saying no biting, holding her snout .... I don't know what else to do. Please help  |
Sounds like Hannah didn't learn to play nicely:( You will have to do what her mom and siblings would have done and that is give a gruff 'no bite' and walk off and totally ignore her. It really sounds like she's wanting to play if she keeps going for other parts of your body. It will take patience on your part but she will eventually get the message and learn to play rough with her toys and not you. |
Yorkies are Ratters ... so they instinctively go for quick small moving objects and hands fit that bill  Don't be surprised if you tap into that behavior that your dog esp a puppy isn't going to bite down hard Be lucky she hasn't tried the death shake on you yet  With that all you need to do is make a Loud noise or a NO BITE! and get up and leave Do Not continue to play with her if she gets rough and she'll soon see that playing nicely gets the attention |
Yes I agree it sounds like she did not learn proper dog etiquette, so now you need to teach her when she is playing too rough. Try snapping at her like the mother dog would, "NO bite" is not something they understand so it is just easier to speak in their language. pushing her away just makes it seem like a game, so you need to move away from her and if she follows snap at her again. Give her a minute and then pick her up and see if she is ready to play nice. repeat as necessary. You might even have to pinch the back of her neck and give a little shake if she doesn't get the message. If she yelps it will be in submission, not in pain. |
Try filling a can up with change, and when she bites you shake it real hard so it makes a lot of noise. This has helped me wtih a lot of problems I've had. |

Do I shake the can when she actually bites or do I do it when it appears that she is about to lunge? |

i was going to post a thread about the same thing until i came across this one. prince and i are having similar problems. he is getting bigger and more aggresive. we had problems with him eating before so as long as hes healthy im happy but he is becomming a little terror now. his new thing is chewing on the metal in his crate which worries me bc i dont want him to damage his teeth. i give him a toy and hell play for a few minutes and go right back to the metal. out of the crate he likes to bite REALLY hard. hell bite down and pull my hand with his little razor sharp teeth :(ii will say NO BITE and give him a toy but hes more interested in my hand. he even growlss when i try to pull away. if hes chewing something he shouldnt be (like my shoes) & i try to take it away he will growl and snap at me. to hannahs mommy: what are we gunna do? |
Oops Melissa ... you're sabotaging yourself by giving him a toy after you've said NO BITE only reinforces the Exact behavior you don't want NO BITE means you get up and take away all attention Samething goes for when he growls and snaps at you It's UH! and whatever he was chewing on you go away |

Sounds like they were weaned too early and Fur Mom didn't have time to teach proper play manners. I agree with JeanieK You need to be the Mom and growl and snap at the baby like Mom would have done, then Mom walks off and if they continue she does it again. They understand "dog language" very quickly. |
I went thru that with Penny....We loudly and sternly said "No Bite"....Now when she nibbles on me...I say "are you biting me" and she starts licking me...So I know she understands.....They are very smart and love to please....I am sure you can get it under control....:) |
well i was only giving him the toy bc im reading a training book and it says to correct the behavior and show him the proper behavior and saying goodboy or OK. so i would correct the behavior and say chew this and good boy when he does. i will try your method, though it is hard to walk away and ignore because he will just get into some other mischief and i need my eyes on him at all times. |
I have been having the same issue with my pup, but standing up immediately and standing still with my back turned to him makes him stop biting super fast. You won't be ignoring him for more than a couple seconds. It's amazing how fast it is. Another thing that works is a really loud high pitched yelp. If he bites me I yelp and he will look at me with huge eyes like "really? that hurt?" and then he'll stop. A lot of times they think they're just playing, and their litter mates would yelp at them if they hurt them. |

Speak to her in "dogese" and do what her mother would do. As a breeder I observe the intersction between mother and puppy. They teach them how to play and punish them when the play too rough. Basically it is no different than human mothers do with their young, and you certainly would not push the tongue down a child that bites. |
today i used the tin can with coins in it and i found it VERY effective. everytime he would bite me or get vicious i would rattle the tin can and say NO BITE. he would back up and look at me and tilt his head like whats that?.. after a few times all i had to do was reach for the can and he would stop. by the end of today all i had to say was NO BITE and he would look at the can and stop biting. i was soooo proud of him. i want to thank you for the idea! |
This is all great advice! Oliver has been having lots of issues with biting me today. I will try the can with the coins in it since it worked for Melissa so well! |
u will be surprised at how well it works. best of luck!! let me know how it goes:) |

It's not working too great. Everytime I shake the can he stops for a second but then starts growling at me and continues to bite. I don't know what to do! Am I doing it wrong?? |
jeez im sorry to hear that.. i guess every dog is different. the noise really bothers prince and he will run away from the can. maybe the sound doesnt really bother ur baby:confused: i guess ull have to try other methods! did u try crying like a puppy when he bites? just like his litter mates would if he was being to rough? its just an idea.. that always catchs prince off guard and hell stop. |

I tried the yelping and that's working so much better! I still don't think he understands the no bite concept but we'll keep working on it! Thanks! |
You can also try a little squirt bottle, or canned air. |
man, i def. know what you mean... my little gunter has been doing the same thing with bitting and when you move a part of your body he will go for something else i have told him no, said ouch everything under the book and nothing has stopped him!!! |
