Almost Dead! My 6 month old yorkie boy wakes up every morning at 3:30-4 a.m. yelping. Yes, it is to be let out to pee. I've gotten the advice that his bladder is too little to last all night and we've taught him to go to the back door to potty so that's why he's yelping. Well, I tried getting up with him as soon as he yelped to let him out and soon he was yelping every two hours all night long! So...someone, tell me that even though he is still only 2.5 pounds, his bladder will eventually be able to go the whole night without expoding onto our laundry room floor!! He lasts during the day while we're at work (6:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. lunch) without peeing.:confused: |

Sounds like he's learned when he barks, you wake up ;) Where is he sleeping at night? He needs to be in a confined area, like a crate or play pen when you cannot be there to supervise. You never know what kind of mischief he will get into. Once you have him confined, phfgkl is right, he should be able to hold it through the night. I would let him bark it out - it'll take a couple of days of no sleep but he'll eventually learn he can't always get what he wants by throwing a temper tantrum. |

Princess is right Sounds like you're the one being manipulated into letting him out He's noticed you come running when he yelps At 6 months puppies can hold their urine longer and every 2 hours is what newborns pee if he's holding it during the day there is no reason why he can't hold it during the night He just wants to see your sleepy face ... thats all |
yes, but... I only got up every 2 hours for about a week when I realized what he was doing. Now he is back to waking up every morning at 3:30-4 but there is always pee in the room where he sleeps. So I guess I'll try the "no water before bed" approach. |
Once Joey was pad trained we just let him sleep in our bed, first with a pad at the foot of the bed on a bench, and next we added steps and put the pad on the floor. I'm such a softy, but he lets me sleep in now. |
If you crate him at night he shouldn't have any accidents. |
I am not sure if holding water is a good idea..it can cause other health problems..why not confine him in a playpen with pee pad? |

Taking their water up before bed time is not going to hurt them at all. How often do you get up in the middle of the night and get something to drink? I never have woken up and had to get a drink.:rolleyes: |

However, now that they are potty trained, they have access to water all times. I think it is a matter of choice - as long as the puppy does have access to water often throughout the day, not having water in the evening probably isn't going to hurt. Small dogs need very little water anyway. |
