Housebreaking I have a 5 month old yorkie and I am having a terrible time at house breaking him. I would really like any advice from anyone who has any experiences with this. Thanks in advance! |
I think you can search on here for lots of articles on this subject. I have the most trouble when I give my little ones too much space to roam around and when I don't make them go outside at least every hour and more if they've just eaten or woken up. Some of my males like to go outside and then hold some back to go in the house after they've been outside. I make them stay out long enough to empty their bladder or send them right back out if they look suspicious. I'm training 2 puppies right now and they are confined to the kitchen area only and are put in their crates when I can't watch them and at night. Good luck |
Are you crate training? I agree with the post above^^ Too much free space is never good! Then you can't watch them constantly and they WILL go. Jackson was doing so good as I was letting him out every hour or after he ate/drank, and if I wasn't home, he stays in his crate, but these past few days since it was Christmas, I was at my dad's house and he had more free roam than ever before and was playing with their dog... well, lets just say, he had a load more accidents than he usually does. confine them to one area! constantly take him outside around the same area and praise like crazy when he goes! if you catch him in the action in the house say "no" and pick him up and bring him outside. |
Hi and welcome. How are you going about training him now? If you could let us know what you are doing, we can see where you might be having trouble. |
I take him out right after he eats, plays, and sleeps and many other various times during the day. There have been times that I will walk around with him outside for 30 minutes waiting for him to pee and he doesn't, and not long after I bring him in the house he will pee on the floor. He will even look up at me after he's done. There are also times that he will run to a part of the house that we are not in and use the bathroom. Whenever we see him running out of the room we usually know he is going to do this. This makes me think he knows what he is doing. He also doesn't use the pee pads I lay out for him. Thanks for any help! |
I also don't let him have free roam of the house. If he is not in the crate then we are watching him, but sometimes he runs away very quickly and he'll pee in the house. I praise him after he potty's outside and I have given him treats when he pee's outside. |
I'd say if he's having this much trouble still, you shouldn't give him the opportunity to run into a different room - block off everything so he can only only be in one room where he has nowhere to run off to hide and pee away from your vision. Other people have also suggested keeping a leash on him indoors that's attached to you, whenever is is inside and not in his crate. So wherever you are, he's right there and has no opportunity to run off to somewhere and pee. Good luck, I'm sure others will have suggestions as well. Lauren & Nikko |
Are you using pee pads for indoors and taking him outside? If so that could be confusing him. When he does go outside, do you give him a treat right away? I use to carry treats in my pocket and give a treat as soon as they were done and used the same term with them. I use "hurry up". Then when they did hurry up...because it was in February, they got their treat and I did a praising party...the neighbors thought I was nuts...but it worked. Both of mine will go as soon as I say "hurry up" which is really nice when it is cold out and when we are traveling. He is still young...so give him time. Be consistant, use the same words all the time and decide if you are going to have him go outside or inside. I personally prefer outside, as then I don't have them using the rugs as pee pads. I did try pee pads in the begining with Myah, but she didn't want to go on them, so we just stuck to outside. We also have a bell by the back door that they both ring when they want to go out. Like the other poster said, don't give him the chance to run off to another room by himself. If he doesn't go when he is outside...put him in his crate for 15 min...then take back outside. Only give him some freedom if you know he has gone. Good Luck..... |
