How often do you take your yorkie out? To go potty? Someone told me they require going out every hour? Because there bladders where so small. So I was wondering how often everyone takes there out? And is it a lot at night to? |
I take my 2 out about every 1.5 - 2 hours or so when I'm home. They are 8 and 5 yrs old though so they should be able to hold it longer, but the 5 yr old has just been here a week and I want to make sure he's getting plenty of opportunities to suceed! ;) I don't take them out at all during the night (usually 10:00 p.m. - 5:30 a.m.) - thank goodness they do fine through the night! |
How often you have to take out your dog depends primarily on its age. At the first months you'd better have a place where he could pee inside the house because they indeed need to go out every 1-2 hours even at night ..and just can't "hold it" My yorkie is now 10months old and i take him out 4 times a day. Morning: Right when he wakes up, feed him and take him out. Midday: Feed him and take him out. Afternoon: Feed him and take him out. Night: Feed him and take him out right before he sleeps (when its time to go to bed) In my opinion you shouldn't have food out all day. And only leave water out if the day is too warm or too cold, if it's not your dog will not really need it. Oh and, something you should know. A dog is more likely to pee when he wakes up, after playing, after bath, and after eating/drinking water. So, be careful. |
We never used pads. When Loki was a puppy he had to go out around 2-3 AM and he would whine to wake us up. Eventually he started sleeping through the night. Sammy was 10 months when we got her and she always slept through the night. They wake up around 7:30 - go outside, eat, go outside again and go back to sleep until like 10am. Then they go out probably once an hour until they eat dinner around 4pm and then they typically nap again. Then they are usually pretty active right before bed and outside every hour or so until bedtime. So, they can nap 2-3 hours without going out but if they are playing or if I am cleaning or moving around the house they follow me and need to go out more often. If I am active they are active, if I am watching TV or something they just nap. If we go out they can stay home by themselves for 3-4 hours and they are fine. Last night we went to a family party and they stayed home from 4-11 and they were OK, but we don't like to do that. We fed them and took them out twice after dinner before we left. Keep in mind they are 2&4 and house trained. PUPPIES need to go out like every 30-60 minutes when you are house training. But it's not like that forever! |
Potty I typically take oscar out every 1.5 to 2 hours. He's pretty good now at letting me know he needs to go, he's almost 3. Although I've heard from alot of yorkie owners that they are never fully trained because their bladders are so small. All are different so it just really depends on the dog and his personality! Accidents still happen but he's pretty good at keeping it under control! |
Franklin and Maggie are 1 and 4 years old - they go out every 4-6 hours. It's around every 3-4 when I am home. They don't normally hold it 6 hours unless we are gone that long. Although I must admit, lately it's been around 5-6 hours between our potty breaks because it's been so dang cold outside. They sleep a lot while I am home and don't seem to mind. We go out first thing in the morning, every 4-6 hours after that, and then once again before bed. They sleep through the night without going. When we were training they went out every two hours (they were already pee-pad trained though). :animal-pa |
Potty Times We have had good luck with our Yorkie. She is now 5 mos. old and has only had 4 accidents. We put up a erase board on the refrigerator so we could track her pee's and poops. We also installed a bell by the door, made it so she could reach it with her nose, because she doesn't bark when she needs to go out. She has accomplished ringing the bell by herself 4 times now in the last month when she needs to poop. We have been blessed at night. From the time we brought her home at 8 weeks, she has slept completely through the night. We put her in bed at 8:30 pm. We do pull the water and food at 6:45 pm. I do, however, put water on my finger and let her lick it just to wet the inside of her mouth before going to bed. By doing this she sleeps until 6:30 am- 7:00 am. When she awakes, she goes out once, does both, then in another hour she goes out again. The only time we don't take her out hourly is when we are away and she has made it so far up to 5 hours. She is truly amazing. But just taking her out every hour has helped alot, and we watch to make sure she goes. When she goes, we reward her with a treat. Hope things get better for you. It really has nothing to do with bladder size, it's more age than anything. My mom has a small dog(a shih tzu) that is 14 years old, she lets her out for the last time at 10:00 pm and then she has to get the dog up and take her out, sometimes at noon. The dog loves to sleep and never wets in the house, so it's mroe age. depending on how old your pup is, depends on how often. Figure one hour for every month of age for the first few mos. |
Just to give you some encouragement for the future... Molly is 4 and she goes out about 9:00 am, sometimes in the late morning or early afternoon, then again around 4:30 pm, after her supper about 7:00 p.m., then just before bed (unless it's really cold!). I'm home all the time and she goes out whenever she wants to and doesn't hesitate to tell me know when she wants out. So - believe me, she can hold it a long time! She never has accidents. BTW, she wasn't trained when I got her at 2 years of age, so don't be discouraged, just be patient! And consistent! |
When I was potty training Nolee, I would take him out every 2 hours. Also, every 10-15 minutes after eating and nap. In the evening around 9 and that would do til 5 or 6 in the am. |
I usually take them out every and an a half to an hour depending if they go or not. |
About every 3 hours- first thing in the am again before i leave for school when i come home on break when i come home for the day (mid-afternoon) and then 2 or 3 more times after that before bed. My dog has a never-ending bladder, she goes every time we go out and if she smells something new she'll go again...I can't believe how much she pee's! lol She is about 4 years old now. |
we go out about every 4 hrs. he holds it overnight. |
pretty much every 1 hour-2 hours. it all depends because sometimes he will sleep for a good hour or more. (jackson is about 12 weeks) unless i see him sniffing around or if he just ate/drank, i'll give him like 5-10 minutes and take him outside after eating/drinking. he actually sleeps through the night too without having an accident. he usually falls asleep around 10pm and wakes up around 7-7:30. |
My girls are 5 1/2 and 1 1/2. I take them out 4 times a day: 7 am, noon, 4-5 pm & 9/10 ish. When they're puppies it should definitely be every hour until they can handle holding it for longer. Once they can, you'll be able to extend your indoor periods bit by bit. |
