Laying in Pee! DESPERATE

I thought I would tell you all about Winston before I ask the question. He is 4 months old. We are trying a combination of crate training and pee pad training which is a long story. He is not a pet store puppy but Im not so sure about his life before me.

Here is my question:::I NEED HELP!!!
Right now, I have winston in a huge wire crate with a basket and a blanket at one end and pee pads at the other. We started with the traditional crate training in the very small crate and no pad but he always peed and pooped and never cared to lay right in it. So, we decided to try the peepad/crate combo. He goes on the pad more often than not but at least once a day, he still pees on the blanket side of the crate and chooses to lay in it. OR...he will walk over to his pee pad and sleep right in it!!!!!!! It is disgusting, I dont understand!!!! We take him out very often...at least every two hours.

I am dying here!! I just cant understand why any dog would WANT to lay in his pee when there is a better option just a foot away?!? He doesnt even go to a particular side of his bed to pee...he will pee right in the middle then PLOP right in the middle of it. He doesnt have a bladder infection, I already had him checked.

PLEAAAAAAAASEEEEEEEE Im BEGGGGGING For HELP!!!!!! Why is he doing this and how do I help him. No one can seem to help and I cant find an answer anywhere else.

Maybe try a belly band. I've heard of them but have never used them. I'm not sure what to tell you. I'm sure that you will get some good ideas from here though.

I crate trained Coco for over a month. It worked great for her but there were sooo many times that I had to clean poop or pee from her crate. So I opted for gating. At about 4.5 months, I started putting a baby gate in my vanity area, with her crate (took the door off to avoid accidents), food, pads, and water, and toys.Worked wonderfully for me. But I must say Coco never even stepped in the pee or poo. She stayed away from it. Why not try taking him out every 45 min-1 hour instead.

Belly Band

Im not so sure how the belly band would work if he doesnt mind being in pee? Isnt it for dogs who dont like laying in pee?!? Cause he doesnt mind, he might welcome the band.

vainchick5 08-23-2005 02:17 PM

The belly band won't let pee get everywhere. It gets absorbed into the pad. So it won't probably rid him of liking laying in his pee but it will keep you from having to bath him or clean him, cause pee won't be on him.

Frustrating isn't it?

I am not sure how big your crate is but I would take the blanket out and leave as much bare floor as possible between a small comfy bed (that is washable) and the wee pad. Put the food and water between the 2 areas. Maybe put a t-shirt that you have worn over the bed to make it more irresisitable.

good luck, he is still young.

Winston'sMom 08-23-2005 02:27 PM

It isnt that big, its just a few steps away but unfortunately we dont have any areas that are uncarpeted. Im just confused and Im hoping that I will get him potty trained sometime this decade.

I would like to find out WHY he does this. I like like the tshirt Idea. I think I will try that and see if it helps. Hey...the only thing he has never peed on is ME! It just might work!

Well I'm a Yorkie newbie and only had Cowboy a week, but he originally did nothing but roll and walk in his pee and poop and I had to bath him at least 2 times a day . hew ould actually have stiff hair all over from pee drying all over him...YUCKKKKKKKKKKK
Now I keep his pee pad in one side of a large cage and only a medium /small stuffed floppy animal in the other side along with his food dishes. no blankets or beds because he would pee all over them. he now goes most of the time on the pad(or close to it and sleeps eats and plays on the other side which mostly is usually dry except maybe an occasional pee paw print from walking off the paper. The stuffed animal is lumpy enough he doesn't pee on it like a blanket but soft and squishy enough he cuddles with it for sleep.

he does however pee on the housefloors if I let him run loose but I figure one step at a time. I am going to start using my pens this weekend.

Oh yeah.. I also cut his scraggle hair short and now I don't have all the stiff fur problems from him peeing funny and getting it all over himself on the long hair.

Winston's Mom....

I hear ya girl!!!!!! I have the same exact problem with my two 3 month old pups! They don't mind laying in it at all and peed and pooped on the blankets too. I removed the blanket. They will lift the pee pad up and poop and pee underneat it. They will go on it too if it is in the crate, but they have no problem with laying in it at all. I think I am going to try the belly bands. Good luck! I'll let you know if anything works and hopefully you'll do the same for me. I just bathed the farts yesterday and had to wash them down today. I clean the crate constantly and take them outside constantly. They also play in the house and I clean that constantly too. I'll put a pee pad out and they will go EVERYWHERE but on it.

Winston'sMom 08-26-2005 05:29 PM

Winson seems to be doing better. It seems that he is actually trying to hold it better. The thing I think made the difference was putting a basket at one end of the cage for him to sleep in. Its just big enough for him to comfortably lay in, but big enough for him to get out of and walk to his pee pad. I also keep a shirt with my scent in the basket because I figured since he had never peed on me--hopefully he wouldnt pee on my shirt either.

He is doing much better I think.

jennifermcb 08-26-2005 05:31 PM

YAY! Glad to hear he's doing much better. He will continue to improve.

shelbysmom 08-26-2005 07:33 PM

yippee!!!

Once you see he is "getting it" for sure it is great if you can gate off a larger protected or uncarpeted area, but leave his pad where it is and see if he will seek it out. If you catch him going on his pad give him a treat!

It takes time (sometimes lots) and patience (even more) but he will get it.

shelbysmom 08-26-2005 07:46 PM

Forgot to mention...when you catch him peeing where you want and you give him a treat use whatever code word you are going to use later to get him to pee/poop on command. I tell Shelby to potty and she does, I give her a treat and say good potty.

Also....I forgot you mentioned you don't have an uncarpeted area. I had that problem too, wanted to put her pen in my room. I found a waterproof blanket at Costco, works great. It's supposed to be for picnics or camping.

I talked to my vet because I had similar problems with Harley. The vet's explaination was because of his environment before I got him. He said 8-12 weeks is a critical time in them forming habits. The people I got Harley from kept several puppies together in a small kennel therefore he got accustomed to pee & poop being in the kennel and it didn't bother him.
I ended up getting one of those exercise pens so that he had more room than in the kennel. I used a shower curtain liner to cover and protect my carpet. Now when I'm at work he has plenty of room for his bed, a place for his water & food bowl a little area to play and then his pee pad area. He's four months now and isn't potty trained yet ... but at least he doesn't lay in his mess anymore.

Winston'sMom 08-27-2005 09:09 AM

Great idea Texas! I like the shower curtain thing, did he ever chew on it though???
