5 year old yorkie won't accept new yorkie pup. I have had Snickers since he was 7 weeks old. He is going on 6 years old. He has always been my baby and is very protective and spoiled!! I just brought home his 6 week old daughter. He runs from her and wants me to hold him. While I'm holding him, he acts aggressive towards Chloe. How do I get him to accept her? |
Just keep introducing them. My male acted a little agressive in a playful kind of way when we got our little female. It just takes time for them to adjust. |
Give him time to get use to her. Don't force him to like her. Also try not pick/hold either one when they are in the same room until they can share you. |
I would say that more time is need as well. But like the other person said, do not force them to interact. Heck, it took me a while to accept my brother whn my parents brought him home too. They will come around and in time learn to love each other. |
I would agree that time is the most important thing right now...don't force anything on either of them...but I would encourage you not to show favorites to either of them, which is really hard but if you keep picking him up when he wants you to he will think that he is better than her and can get what he wants...later on this behavior can cause trouble... you can try playing with a toy both will like!!! |
Poor Snickers, my JacJac is in the same boat. We just adopted his 5 month little sister that he hates! She's been with us for almost a months and things are going A LOT better than the first few weeks. Little sister just adores him and follows him around. He will now tollerate her lying next to him on his big fluffy pillow. It took me 3 weeks to finally get a picture of them together! I will send you one...as soon as I figure out how to do that. (i'm not too computer savy) I try and let him still be number one and we still have our "alone time" that he really needs! My breeder told me that it may take 3 months for him to get used to her. I know that he keeps wondering when she'll go home! They are SO cute together and I'm thrilled to finally have TWO yorkies! I think Snickers just needs more time...she'll win him over. Good luck! The best rule of thumb is to let them sort it out providing there is no blood shed. It takes time, time and more time. I always tell my older dogs to "be nice" and if they become aggressive towards a little one then they are in trouble. I've been through this countless times over the years taking in rescues and foster pups. Be sure and provide your older dog with a "safe" place where he can get away from the pup. I once had an adult female yorkie who had been an only child since puppyhood and we introduced a rescued maltipoo. Those two hated each other and would fight like mad, there were parts of ears removed etc. No amount of scolding etc seemed to work. Then all of a sudden after 8 that's right EIGHT months, it was as if someone turned a switch and they were best buddies. They remained best buddies until the yorkie passed on, sadly her maltipoo buddy soon followed her. I know they are together sorting out the little ones on the other side of Rainbow Bridge. So patience is the key, they will eventually sort it out as to who's who. Presently my older yorkie gal wants nothing to do with Nugget but thankfully she is the most docile dog I've ever had so she just puts up with the the little terror's antics. |
Rufus and Bocephus I brought home Rufus a couple of days ago and he doesn't like Our boxer. At first he would run Bo out of the room and now he is starting to tolerate him better. It doesn't help that bo is so much larger and still acts like a puppy that wants to be in your lap. It will just take some time to adjust I would imagine. When Rufus is on my lap and starts to Growl at Bo I just calmly say "rufus no" and he stops growling. |
I only have one and want another one but fear that Gus will be the same way. I can't give any advise in the matter, but please keep us posted. |
my two still don't love each other and it has been 5months...they are both very mean to each other...Silk is always like herding Remmy. When he tries to get on the couch she blocks him. If she does this I put her off the couch. Remmy has a fit when she comes near his food but she will only eat out of the bowl he is eating out of...so they usually take turns running back and forth to the bowl. If I give them both a chew treat...she wants nothing to do with hers and will stalk Remmy until he puts it down and then swipe it from him. |
try feeding them in different rooms and pick up the food after 15 minutes. My Little Bear will still to this day try and steal any treat the others have but she knows she isn't supposed to. If she takes a chewie that is not hers I will take it away from her, tell her NO. She's a greedy guts little gal who is set in her ways (12 years old). Turbo will take the toys away from the pup but the pup just goes steals them back again. It takes time. |
It took Sophie several days to a week to finally stop pouting and accept Daisy as her bestest friend! I've heard that it's better to introduce a new puppy when the first puppy is younger, but I do know of many cases where the older puppy learned to love the new one, after awhile. They *will* sort it out and become bestest buds! |

sibling rivarly I have a 4yr old male yorkie and a 3yr old female .In March I got a male puppy named Bandit.Bear hated the pup until he was about 6mths old,he even grabbed him up and shook him side to side like a rag doll when he was tiny,After the second time my female had seen enough, she thought the pup was her pup and just fell in love with him and would jump in middle if bear showed aggresive behavior.Just be careful the pup stays away from the older dogs toys and food this what causes the aggresion. Now they all get along great but if I take Bandit out without Brittany, she cries, she cried the whole time we were at the vet . |
