Anyone else w/ STUBBORN YORKIE issues? So- my yorkie is now about 8 months and boy is he being stubborn! He was doing AWESOME with potty training. He would pee consistently on the pee pad and pick it up pretty quickly considering he was a puppy... anyway, all of a sudden he started a tricky little thing where he will pee right NEXT to the pee pad... not ON the pee pad like he knows he is supposed to, but right next to the pee pad. Literally like half an inch beside the pee pad! I know he's doing it on purpose b/c he's a little stinker like that... and when I catch him in the act I say "no!" and he just looks at me and smiles with a look on his face like "what? I'm not doing anything..." and walks away... grrr.... anyone else have as stubborn yorkie like mine? I'm just looking for someone to commiserate with me! Anyone? |
We're feeling your pain. Atticus is nearly a year old. We've had similar problems. Because he was going off the pad instead of on, we started using a doggie litter box (from Petsmart) and put the pad in it so he would have to jump in and out. It worked for awhile (about 5 months). But he would not want to jump all the way in so the trough would fill every so often. Then, (about 20 percent of the time) he would not even bother going that far, he'd go right in front of the litter box. He didn't want to go near the spots he went before. We just did away with the box and it went down to 10 percent. Actually,we are discovering that he prefers to go outside to use the potty. So we're going to try the Tell Bell and work on outside training some. Frustrating, indeed. But he's so adorable that the frustration melts away quickly...until next time. :) |
Pee pad dilemmas Hi there. I've been through the very same issues. Pixel is now a year old and has returned to using the pee pads reliably. She was fantastic right up until she was spayed; she was sick from the anesthetic and had an allergic reaction to the pain meds, poor little soul. She had several accidents, so when she was feeling better, I steam cleaned the rugs. Mistake; she stopped using the pee pads entirely after that. It took a few months to get her back to the reliable state again, but she's there. She has done a few other weird things (like ruffling up the blankets on my bed to make her "nest" and then peed in it!) but she's pretty good otherwise. She has missed the pee pad a few times; she thinks she's on it because her front paws are, but her hind quarters are dangling over the edge. :) I finally clued in and bought a clear plastic rug protector and cut it to fit where the pee pad goes; this way, if she misses, the plastic protects the rug and it's very easy to clean up. |
I'm wondering if it's something besides being stubborn, lets say something happened he didn't like when he was on the pad. A noise, a feeling, wet feet? . . . and now he gets close, but he won't go on the pad. Have you thought about washable pads? Joey does a lot better with those. |
OMG...Missy started doing this today! LOL! Twice she did it, both times I picked her up mid-pee and moved her onto the pad. Ha! |
General Lee does really good on the pee pads at night and if the weather is really bad (like this morning when it was -10 wind chill). However, when we are playing with the laser, he will stop and pee right where his is at. I think it is like a kid who does not want to stop doing what they are doing to go potty. |
Annie, bless her heart, tried really hard to use the wee-wee pads, but more times then not she'd miss. One day I saw her pottying and saw what the problem was. Her front feet, shoulders and head were 'on' the pad, but her bum wasn't. So she thought she was on the pad and doing the right thing, she just didn't realize the business end wasn't on the pad. Now Gracie won't use the pad if it has more then 3 spots already on it. For all her love of rolling in the mud and eating yucky things that she digs up, she quite prissy about where she'll potty. :D So maybe it's a combo of the two. :) |
Daisy has been doing the same thing for about a week! I did change the brand of pee pads, so I thought that maybe she didn't like the attractant smell in the new pads. I have no idea why she is doing it either, that is just my uneducated guess. I hope someone can add some info on this too. |
Oh I know the feeling, Buddy wont pee on the pad if there is more than three pee's on it, certainly wont go near it if he has poo'd on it. If I try and move the pee pad closer to the door so that he will eventually understand that he has to go outside to wee, he will just go to where the pee pad was and wee there. I do believe that telling him how good he was when he did his first pee on the pad in that area was a bad idea, cause now he thinks its a good idea. Buddy is 5 months old:) |
Yes!! I feel all of your pain!! BOTH of my sneaky little guys do that!!! They both will pee right by the pad, I dont know what to do either, but I do notice when I keep the pads fresh they tend to go ON the pad and not just next to it. They are prissy little guys huh!! If any one has a COSTCO they sell like 100 pads for 10.00$ sometimes just keep a look out, and when they have them I buy like 3 boxes just because they is a smokin deal!! |
Chloe always pees on the pad ...she is usually dead center. but sometimes when she is pooing she will walk around on the pad ( while still in poo positin ) and then walk off the pad and the poo falls right next to the pad.. why she feels the need to take a stroll around the pee pad while pooing is beyond me. |
:grin2:LMAO... Daisy enjoys a little stroll when she poops too!!! Seriously, I need help on this peeing by the pad thing. It's starting to un-nerve me. What the heck should I do  I don't want to get angry at her, I know she is still learning. I tell her "no potty" in a stern voice. I can tell she knows it's not o.k. She comes next to me and it's like she says' "sorry Mama". I thought that maybe it was the new pads, so I went back to the first ones that I used, nope...not it.:( I know it's hard to potty train, but good grief.... you're suppose to be a smart dog!!! Help!!!! Please!!!! Lost in the wetlands:eek: |
maybe say sumthing besides no potty, that sounds an awful lot like go potty...just an idea! |
Good point Heather. What do you suggest I say instead? |

Sometimes, I think she thinks she's done, but as she's walking away, realizes there's more... Other times, I know it gets caught in her fur and walking away causes it to fall off - wherever. But there may be still other times where I have no idea what's going on. Thankfully, MOST of the time, it's right where it should be! :) |
Ginger has a cousin that is very stubborn. We can't teach her any tricks. We tried to teach her sit, but when we hold the treat over her head, she runs away. She's semi-potty trained, and barks at visitors. She's very skittish and shakes during car rides. She is held by her daddy all the time and he is afraid to leave her alone. How do you train a stubborn puppy? |
we use a cheap dollar store rug for him to go on right by the door... easy to wash in the tub and a good grip like outdoors ...most seem to do that watuzzi dance when they poop so the need the space to do that ... just an idea ...when Oliver was a pup he used to run around with those piddle pads :) thats when we got the rug idea !:animal-pa |
I have yet to get General Lee to poop on a pad! He is very good peeing on a pad and does not miss much. Now and then. When we first started to train him he got little treats when he went on the pad. He still does now and then as a reminder. He is now a little over a year. |
I just got a yorkie pup a few weeks ago - Hayley is now 3 1/2 months old and weighs 2.0 lbs. She is very picky about the brand of pee pad she will use. I had one brand that she used fine, and then I found these new ones that are supposed to have a grass scent. But guess what?? She didn't want anything to do with those! So I had to go back to the first brand I was using and now she uses those. She is picky...very weird. She goes pee and poop on them. She doesn't usually miss when she pees, but once in awhile when she poops she misses by an inch or so, but hey, I am still proud because she knows where to go. Once in awhile she will pee on the carpet but that is rare. I am trying to get her to ding the bell on the door to let me know she needs to go outside, but so far no luck with that (it has only been a week). I think these tiny dog breeds are just hard to train....I guess we need patience. |
