Frustrated with cold-weather potty habits!!! My puppy is almost 6 months and up until our recent blizzard and -40 degree windchill days she was for the most part great at going to the door to go potty. In fact, she only would occasionally poop downstairs if we didn't see her at the door. And she almost NEVER peed in the house! Now that it's so cold out she has no problem peeing wherever-and sometimes right in front of me. I'll go outside with her and she stands there and lifts her legs alternately cause her paws are so cold. Then she sits and that's it. I want to say, "hello! Go pee fast and we can go in!" But she barely squats and just sits there. I'm very frustrated because she was doing so well and now I hope that this doesn't reverse all the progress we've made. I've thought of pee pads but paper is her favorite thing to destroy at the moment. If anything paper hits the ground it's in shreds in seconds. Does anyone have advice, encouraging words, hints...This is going to be a very long winter and a lot of ruined carpet until this is resolved! Help! |
Franklin has has a lot more accidents lately now that's it's cold outside. Do you have a coat or PJs for her? I know it sounds silly but you can obviously tell she's cold, so.. why not? :) Franklin and Maggie wear pajamas and a big warm coat when we go outside. Then we walk a lot. I don't know if you have a backyard, but we live in an apartment so we have no choice but to walk around. If she's just sitting down in your backyard, try putting a leash on her and walking around. We just walk and walk and walk until he pees. Franklin is slowly learning that the faster he potties, the faster we go inside! Oh and make sure you bring super special treats! Until then maybe you can get some diapers to save your sanity? |
I just re-read your post and realized you said "going to the door". Haha, mine don't even go to the door and they're 1 and 4! I think what you'll have to do is force her to potty - i.e. retrain her. When we were training we went out every 2 hours and now we go out every 4-6 hours, no matter. It's more like 4 when we're home and 6 when we're not because they won't potty while confined. This is only for pee, Franklin still doesn't quite have the poop thing down! |
I am not exagerating when I say I throw Isla out every 30 min. now. Plus we have a German Shepherd mix that stays outside and Isla constantly wants to go "see" her. So, she could be out even more. For just minutes at a time. Enough to go pee!! I'm putting her outside as much as I did when we were training her. That's frustrating in itself cause she's not needing to go that often now her bladder's bigger so she doesn't potty each time. So when she doesn't you don't know how long she needs to wait till she really does! UGGG!!!!! |
Same here in Central New York. One day rain, then snow, then wind, then God knows. I went out and bought these booties that look like socks for Roxy, as she's pretty spoiled at 7 months. I found by keeping her feet in these from petsmart, they were only like $6 and well worth it, she will walk a little longer with me and do all her bussiness. She's pretty much house broken, but when the weather turns so does she. |
