How to crate-train a dog that has never been crated before? Lately Coral has really gotten out of control with peeing. She has started peeing on the bed on a daily basis. I keep all three of them gated in the bedroom when we are not home. Even when the steps are removed, she is able to jump onto the bed. Because of this, I'd like to crate her when we are not home. Does anyone have any suggestions or tips on how to get her used to the crate? She's 7 months old. |
Put her in the crate for a several minutes at a time...and gradually increase the time. Unfortunately since she's peed on the bed so frequently...the smell is still there and she may continue to use that spot when she gets the chance. |
Especially since shes older I'd say break her into it very slow. If you get a plastic crate, take the top of and let her play in just the bottom then start putting the top on. If its a metal one, play fetch with her into it so she gets to run in and out without fear.:) Also feed her in it and don't make a big deal when she comes out of it, but make a huge deal out of it when she goes in.I'd also so not to give in if she barks or whines. My dad always told us that children and animals are the worlds biggest terrorists and no matter what there is no negotiation because if you give in once they know you'll give in again. (may not be totally pc, but is still rather accurate) Good luck! |
what we did was put them in for two hours at a time and then let them out only to potty and eat with an occasional play time then move it to three hours and so on until she is to the point where you can leave her in there the whole time you are gone once you get to that point and she hasnt had any accidents and you feel you can trust her give it a try for a day if she slips up she goes back in the kennel while the others dont. they are very smart animals if you give them an inch they will take ten miles. also yorkies are very stubborn so you need to show her you are even more stubborn |
Thanks everyone! |
