potty pad training: to treat or not to treat...(that is the question) lol I have kind of a silly dilemma...Turky is pretty good about using his pad, but when it comes to #2, he gets so anxious for his treat, he always hops off the pad/tray before he actually finishes his business. It's frustrating because he has the right idea, but he often ends up 'missing the target'. |
Is he excited because you're standing nearby with a treat? I've learned to turn my back when mine are going potty cause if they see me watching they try to 'hurry up':rolleyes: |
thats a tough one i had read many other posts like that and it just didnt sound like my cup of tea so we decided to have our two just go outside and then while they are in the grass they go and if they arent done it still stays out on the yard. sorry im not much help here but i would say you should get away from treating every time and maybe do it every other time for a few weeks and then every third time and so on and so forth until he is off the treat. then after six months or so of working him off the treat he wont expect them anymore and will still continue to use the pad. then maybe he will stay until he is truly done. then you can treat him for it just randomly. i believe if you treat too much it looses its bribbing power and wont be as effective unless you use a new treat for everything you want to teach them. but then you would be handing out more treats than anything else. praise should be treat enough for going the bathroom. |

Smart boy! I also agree with weaning them off the treats. I only did it when mine were puppies. Now they just get praise - they think it's a big deal to follow me to the toilet to watch me flush their poops:D |

Good Luck with training Turk! Bella was trained on pee pads very easily. She was offered treats occasionally to help with training & always PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE!!;) She is 1.5 yrs old, but still sometimes is in a rush with the pooping.:rolleyes: She will do her business, then take off fast.:p So it isn't the treats issue for her, since they were only used when she was a puppy. |
I never used treats just alot of cheering and " good girl " so she felt good for doing her business on the pads, this works great and I haven't had any accidents in at least three weeks now. |
This is a tough one... not sure I have any advice. My Biggie hardly ever poops inside. He does his business outside most of the time. He only uses his pad when he really has to go when we are at work and 99% of the time he just pees. On the rare occassion he does poop on the pad sometimes the poop drops just off the pad. I notice when he poops outside that he kinda moves a little bit right after he squats..I figure he does the same when using the pad and just missed since it is such a small area. Hang in there....:) |
